Pickle's 4th birthday review Reported by tom / Submitted 25-09-01 20:59 Well, we know the Brixton Academy's big, but can the good vibe tribe fill it and not end up the no-vibe tribe ??? Read on.... We arrived in Brixton around 11pm and went straight into the Academy (no queues yay !). From the moment we entered the main arena it was clear there was going to be a huuuuuge party there tonight. The whole place was decked out Pickle style with a big chest of goodies suspended over the hard house foyer, Pickle balloons everywhere, and a great stage setup with a massive Pickle birthday cake. Solid Sunday (www.hardmongrel.com were running the hard house foyer for the entire night and the place was jumping absolutely non-stop the whole time. We kicked off in there while the main arena filled up and did a bit of loosening up (it's important to do a few stretches just to prepare the body for the abuse ahead ) By 12:30 things were nicely starting to happen in the main arena so we dutifully filed in and joined the heaving throng. One cool thing about the night was that it never got cattletruck full in the main room like I've experienced in the past at the Academy so there was always room to dance properly (if u wanted to) and not have to worry about your neighbours toes the whole time. The tunes were trancey but on the harder side to keep the crowd moving, the lighting was some of the best that I've seen anywhere, huge house strobes, wicked looking color spots everywhere and combined with a really friendly crowd atmosphere. The only thing a bit lacking on the lights side was the laser which was a bit crappy, I would love to see the Academy with a full on set of multicolor lasers blazing over everyone's heads. Also worth a mention were the cool visuals from Autopilot (www.autopilot.co.uk), if u haven't seen this before they have a very funky looking animated robot projected onto screens that dances like a madman. Can't remember the sequence of events too clearly (surpise!) but there were some great stage performance: The Pickle dancers: View Movie Anglegrinder GrrrL (such a cool stage performance) Stilt walkers: And Fire Dancers: View Movie Following on from Billy 'Daniel' Bunter's set, at 3am on comes a man with a mic, MC Ribbz, to intro the forthcoming live set from Jon Doe and Lee James and apologise for Lab4's unfortunate absence (for the reason click here). Jon and Lee pounded out a pretty damn good live set, but we found the MC'ing over the tracks did just not help at all (for more discussion on the merits of MCs at trance nights check out the forums), it f*cked up the vibe for us so we retreated to the hard house foyer. Here things were just totally going OFF thanks to Beyers who was pounding out hard house floor flattener after floor flattener and the crowd were going for it. After he played Parker & Clind's 'Generator' mid-set it was clear this man was on a mission to destroy us all. Following straight on was Steve Blake who took off hammering out the anthems where Beyers left off. Everything was a bit of a blur through till 5:30 when they closed the foyer to channel everyone back to the main arena for the climax of Thermobee's set. Don't think I've ever heard a crowd shout out more enthusiastically for 'one more tune'. Fortunately back on the main floor Thermobee had things storming and the crowd in the palm of his hands. View Movie And another It all ended waaay too soon with the Pickle crew all onstage for a dancing finale. What a night, thank u Pickle !
