Peachy Ravers 3rd Birthday & Camden Palace

Reported by Calanth / Submitted 09-12-03 11:58

For those of you who are pierced or wear loads of metallic hair clips, be prepared for a rather trying time as you enter this venue and the metal-detector continues to go ‘psycho’ no matter what you take out of your pockets! Once you make it through this rather annoying process though, you will be largely left alone for the rest of the night. No over-zealous security guards forcing your fingers open to inspect every crumpled tissue or coin you pull out of your pocket.

As I kicked off my jeans, to reveal rather lurid pink tights and a matching pink and silver dress, several boys came up and presented me with a small picture of a ferrett! They declared that this night was ‘all about the ferrett’ and dissapeared. During the course of the night I received 3 more ferretts from various strangers, adding a surreal quality to the whole adventure.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Camden Palace, it’s an old theatre with loads of levels, balconies and hidey-holes. So you can rave at various elevations and chill out in any number of spaces. Sure the carpet is none too clean and tall women will bang their heads if they run into the bathrooms without ducking, but this venue rates highly for comfort and character. The acoustics and ventialtion here are first rate too.

Girls forget the kitten-heels for this one. The dress code is relaxed, ecclectic and for some a little eccentric. Amongst the comfey trainers and jeans I saw face-paint, furry leg-warmers and masks. However one apparently well dressed individual had forgotten an essential ingredient to a great night out- personal hygene! Arrgh! ‘Mr Smelly’ cut a swathe through mortified clubbers with body-odour that can only be described as a pottentially deadly weapon. He then had the temerity to get angry when retching women fled from his pungent advances! No matter who you are and what you wear, you’re destined to have a lonely night if you don’t first aquaint yourself with soap, water and deoderant.

For the duration of the night the lighting remained bright and colourful, and the Peachy Ravers people had set up some fine inflatable decorations and projected some wicked graphics onto a white ‘anenome’- shaped one over the pit and onto screens on the stage. Durng the first part of the night the two regular dancers also put on a fine show, but I fealt a little sorry for the man who could stand on one leg and hold the other next to his head, as all this effort seemed to be a little under-appreciated.

From the get-go this was a night of uplifting trance and a really positive, energetic vibe. Graham Gold, Dave Lambert, Darren Pearce and Pele turned it on for the crowd and everyone seemed to be having an outstanding night. The crowd was very mixed in age and nationality, and was quite obviously there for the music and friendly vibe. Around 2am Dave Irvine came on for a guest set, and in fact he was celebrating his birthday on the night. Somehow the sound just seemed to expand in all directions and this little Aussie lost track of time and most other things for a fir while after that.

In the end they turned on the ‘ugly lights’ and swept us all out with the trash! A fine night and I’d recommend you check out Peachy Ravers for yourself!
Thumbs up
