Inspire, Create, INNOVATE: Interview with New Resident Phil Reynolds

Reported by Olly Perris / Submitted 16-03-05 20:38

Phil Reynolds needs little introduction. Perhaps the most famous London hard trance DJ on the scene, Phil has headlined practically every single major London promotion over the last few years in a career which has seen him DJ in countries such as Japan, Australia and New Zealand, as well as securing a number of huge productions under his belt, including the genre-defining 'Instrumental', co-written with Nick Sentience. For this reason, Innovate, the freshest hard trance promotion on the scene, has recently announced Phil Reynolds as their new resident. With the next Innovate only days away (Saturday, 19th March @ The Fridge, Brixton), Phil was kind enough to answer some questions about his new album, his recent tours of Japan and Australia and his new production work.

You've recently been working on your artist album. Tell us about what we can expect to hear from this.

Well I’m kinda keeping it a secret!! I’ve been working really hard over the past year on it and it's called Tales Of The Unexpected. It’s still a way off being finished, but I’m really excited about it.

Will the album be purely hard dance, or will you be experimenting with producing other genres on the album as well? If so, will you be collaborating or working with anyone special from any particular genre on the album?

It’s going to be multi genred. I will have a few collaborations, but it’s mostly my own stuff.
Your hard dance output has been relatively laid back recently. Do you have any plans for a new single or collaboration some time in the near future?

Because I’ve been really busy with the album, I haven’t had loads of time to do other stuff. I’ve done tracks with Greg Brookman and Danny Gilligan, both which aren’t quite finished off yet. I’ve also done a cheeky bootleg of something with Matt Williams, which I won’t name, but that should be making a release sometime in the near future. I also have a remix to do for Impact, so there will be quite a bit coming out in the next few months.

Your label Impact (co-run with Steve Blake) has now been one of the leading hard trance labels for quite some time. What can we look forward to from the label in the coming months?

We try not to release too much stuff. We try to concentrate on quality rather than quantity. The next release is by Steve and Scotty Headges and then we have a track by Greg Brookman and then track by Dave Lockrie and Richard Launch, which I’m remixing.

Do you have any tracks for the label which you are particularly excited about?

The Greg Brookman one is a real corker. A little bit different from our usual stuff.

The hard trance sound is arguably returning, with nights such as Innovate formulated to give the clubber a night of solid trance music. Given your experiences from DJing at the moment, what sound do you feel the crowds are reacting to?

Well different crowds react to different things. I must admit the the stuff I’m playing at the moment is really working for me. There is a lot of good hard trance being produced at the moment and I’m lucky that I get a lot of it before most people do. On the whole though, people do seem to be enjoying the hard trance sound at the moment.

Your track 'Instrumental' with Nick Sentience on Nukleuz back in 2001 arguably invented the genre 'hard dance', with its combination of energetic beats and uplifting trance riffs. Can you see the current trend towards techier, harder dance music dying out again in favour of hard trance, just as it did when 'Instrumental' was first released?

I don’t seeing it dying out. As I said before, different people like different types of music. The crowds up north prefer a harder techier sound, whereas down south they like a slightly more trancier sound. Clubs like Innovate play a range of different DJs playing different types of music, which most clubs don’t do. It’s good because you never get bored of the music.

Onto DJing. You have recently been announced as the new resident for Innovate. What do you think Innovate has to offer the average clubber? Why should they choose to visit Innovate over any other night?

Clubs like Innovate play a range of different DJs playing different types of music, which most clubs don’t do. It’s good because you never get bored of the music. It also promotes new music, so if you go to Innovate you’ll get to hear tunes that aren’t coming out for six months.

Can you perhaps see the current trend of newer hard trance promotions, for example, Innovate & Addiction, becoming more popular over harder house events over the course of 2005?

We’ll just have to wait and see. It comes down to hard work normally and I’m sure that all the people involved with Innovate will be working their arses off to make sure that Innovate is very successful this year.

Recently you have played abroad in Japan and Australia. How do you find the crowds react to hard trance over there? Is there much difference between the reactions from the UK crowds?

The crowds in Japan and Oz love there trance. In Japan they love commercial trance, the real cheesy stuff. They go mad for it. They like the harder stuff, but I generally have to play stuff with big melodies in them. In Oz, German trance or hard style is really big. The hard trance scene is getting smaller, but there is still loads of ex-Londoners who still love it. It’s a shame as it used to be really popular in Oz.

I recently saw you play and it seemed your entire set was from CDR! Do you still use vinyl for any new tunes or is it CD all the way for you now?

The reason why I play cds is because all the stuff on cd hasn’t been released on vinyl yet. It’s as simple as that. As soon as the tracks are released on vinyl I play the vinyl and not the cd. I have a lot of tunes at the moment, which is why I’m playing so many cds.

Finally, who do you tip for the top in 2005? Which promotions do you feel will succeed this year as the market gets a lot more competitive?

It’s always difficult to predict. I think Jason Cortez will do really well as a producer this year. I’ve got a cd of his new tunes are they are all amazing. I’ve been really impressed with what Heat did last year and I can see them doing really well again this year. And hopefully Innovate will continue to grow and become as successful as promotions like Frantic and Heat.

Don't forget to check out Phil this coming Saturday at Innovate @ The Fridge, Brixton, alongside Donna Birt, K.A.R.L & Conrad, K90 (Live), Ali Wilson, Nick Sentience & Nicki S.
