WiLDCHiLD Mayhem in Milton Keynes Preview with Little Gem and Lucy Fur
Reported by Chloe Leeks

Both rising DJs, Gem and Lucy are part of the Kent crew. Having DJ’d for the past few years, these ladies have proved they like it hard. Cyberkitten resident Lucy Fur and WiLDCHiLD resident Little Gem, these girls are part of the elite female DJ sensation that we see in the clubs today. Their influences stem from Lisa Lashes and Tara Reynolds and they both have a killer passion to eventually play the big clubs on the White Isles. With them both poised to inject a bolt of lightning into the hearts of 2500 clubbers on Saturday 9th April at Mayhem in Milton Keynes (MIMK), I caught up with the lustrous ladies to talk music, future careers and WiLDCHiLD shenanigans.
CL: Gem you’ve just had you first album debut on Tidy Addict with ‘Sounds and Beats’ mixed with Rumble, could you tell us more about the track? Lucy, have you been in the studio recently, can we expect a release sometime soon?
LG: Yep, the track is a collaboration between myself and Jon Rundell. I was dead chuffed with the track anyway, so to then have it appear on the new Tidy Addict compilation, was superb! It’s a little different to my usual stuff, it’s more of a chugger than a big hard trancer, but it’s great, so go buy it kids!
LF: I have many studio plans with lots of different artists but nothing to report home about yet – I’ll keep you posted!
CL: What are you looking forward to most at Mayhem in Milton Keynes on 9th April?
LG: I think it must be just experiencing WiLDCHiLD outside of London. It’s the first ever WiLDCHiLD being held outside of the capital, so it’s going to be interesting to see how the usual WiLDCHiLD shenanigans go down with the Milton Keynes massive.
LF: Alongside playing for some of the leading hard dance promotions in the UK, I am really looking forward to playing back to back with my Cyberkitten resident/partner in crime. It will be a great set! And seeing my Cyberkitten family as I only get to see the crew once a month due to them being Midlands based and I am south! I’m very excited about seeing the new venue too, which is the new home to a monthly Cyberkitten event!
CL: What can we expect to hear from you both?
LG: You can expect to hear me banging out my usual hard trance signature sound, but with the addition of some brand new tracks hot off the press!
LF: Pure energy! Lots of driving baselines and a few hoovers for good measure! The usual sound I like to create and that my following have come to love and expect from me!
CL: Have you played b2b with your respective partners before (Gem with Amber D and Lucy with Stevie G)?
LG: Nope, I’ve never had the pleasure of sharing the wheels of steel with the lovely Amber D, but I can imagine it’s going to be one to remember! I really like Amber’s style, so I’m sure the two of us should be able to come up with the goods at Milton Keynes!
LF: No I haven’t played with Stevie but it’s well over due. I respect him highly as a producer and a DJ and am really looking forward to it. Musically and technically I feel we are on the same level, which I think is very important in a b2b set. Rock on!
CL: You both have had some great bookings lately (Gem @ HHA in February and Lucy at Timeless Frantic in March). What has been the highlight of you career to date and why?
LG: My highlight to date has to be playing the main room at WiLDCHiLD at our last event on 4th Feb at Heaven. JFK had it nicely rocking with his tuff trance, and then I came on to take it up a gear, ready for the Queen of all things hard, the one and only Lisa Lashes! The crowd were wicked and I have to say, I loved every minute of my set.
LF: Too many!!! I’m a happy girl - play to 5 people in a barn or 1500 people in a venue like SE1 club. The one that I think of recently is my main room Convergence debut for Frantic in September of last year. I felt like I really showed my ability in that set and I feel it was partly what clinched my Convergence residency.
CL: Gem you have recently signed to BBL, how has this changed your DJ career? Lucy you manage your own bookings, what would be your dream booking agency?
LG: BBL has given me the opportunity to play at new events and to spread my wings all over the UK. It’s great to be part of a new agency as we can both grow and develop as the scene does.
LF: I am not so sure that there is such a thing as a dream agency! I am very happy with what I am doing at the moment and it is all at the right pace for me to handle. When the time comes, I am sure I will be looking for that agency though!
CL: You both have yet to branch out internationally, what venue and what promoter would you like to play at/for most?
LG: Being totally nuts about Ibiza, I have to say it would be the White Isle for sure! Any of the clubs would do me, but if I had to name names, it would have to be Amnesia or Pacha. I would obviously love to play countries such as Australia and America, but there’s a special place in my heart for Ibiza, so that’ll do for me!
LF: I personally would love to play at LASHED in Ibiza. Even though there is not much demand for hard dance on the island, the parties that supply it go off! I am negotiating playing for Charleyz Angelz in Ibiza this summer so I will keep you posted!
CL: What are you tips for 2005, any other rising stars we should be looking out for?
LG: My hot tip for 2005 on the production side of things would have to be Greg Brookman. He smashed it last year and this year will be even bigger for him. And out of all the upcoming DJs there are at the moment, I reckon some guys to watch out for are Daley and Garbo, two lovely Midlands lads that are tearing it apart for WiLDCHiLD at the moment and I can’t forget to mention regular player at WiLDCHiLD Chris Hawkes.
LF: Tips for 2005?! Work and play hard! Benefits will reek in the end. Stars of 2005? There are many but in my heart I would have to say Steve Maynard for DJs and Tom Basquil for producers. Steve has more than proved his capabilities of playing every genre to every different occasion and I enjoy every set he plays. Tom’s production is going from strength to strength with some fantastic tracks engineered by Andy Alder - some of which you can hear on my latest Convergence demo.
CL: You’re both from Kent, did you know each other before you became hard dance DJs?
LG: Nope, unfortunately I didn’t know Lucy before I was a DJ, but I’ve made up for lost time by nicking her wine at every opportunity… sorry Lucy!
LF: No, but if I would have met Gem in a club or pub I would have started a chat, she is the sort of mate you have for life. The world is such a small place!
CL: What has been your most memorable Wildchild to date and why?
LG: As I said earlier, it has to be the 4th Feb event at Heaven. The event was one of the best yet and sticks in my mind because of so many reasons. The crowd were amazing in every room, the DJs were top, the lighting, sound, atmosphere, just everything came together for that event, making it, in my opinion, one of the best WiLDCHiLD’s to date!
LF: Ohhh too many!!!! It’s gotta have been when I played b2b with Gem actually in room 2 at SE1 last year!! Not only did I get to play earlier in the night when someone was late but me and Gem had a great b2b set! The atmosphere was electric, condensation was dripping from the ceiling, the crowd were going mad - it was great!
CL: With Gem chucking out Midget Gems at every Wildchild set I am sure there will be one or two that will be munched in the evening. How many midget gems can you fit into your mouth at once?
LG: Ha ha! I’m actually going to try this… hold on, I’ll let you know in a sec… *mumbles something with mouth full, before removing entire contents from mouth before choking occurs!* OK, at final count, it’s… 18 midget gems!
LF: I’m not sure but we can find out on the night! It’s gotta be at least 50 (how big are they!!?)
CL: With space hoppers in store as part of the Wildchild shenanigans, how many times do you think you can bounce on one before falling off?
LG: I do always try to have a go at every event, but unfortunately I never bounce more than once before falling backwards – not a good look!
LF: Before or after a drink?! 3 times before, none after!!! I’m not good at them but I’m good on stilts, got any of those?
CL: What’s your favourite hard dance track to date and why?
LG: There’s too many to choose from, but if I had to whittle it down to one, it would have to be Storm ‘Time To Burn’ – I love this track! It will undoubtedly get a spin in Milton Keynes!
LF: That’s an impossible question, I really can’t answer that! I change my mind all the time. I will be going through my records for a gig and pull out things I haven’t played for ages and be like, ‘oh I love this one; oh I love this one too...’.
CL: Gem will we see you in another sparkling turquoise number? Lucy, do you have any trademarks that you wear/bring to every set…fur?
LG: I’m afraid so! I’ve got a nice little number in store, and matching hair too, so watch out!
LF: Ha ha! I used to have Zebra print furry leg warmers and a fluffy bra, but they have retired! I am very passionate about my animal print stuff – I usually try to wear something but my record bag is silver Leopard print and my CD case is furry Zebra print!
CL: And finally a question for all the boys. You must get a lot of male (and the odd female) attention when you play, are you single, how could one of our male clubbers woo you?
LG: Oh yeah, loads and loads! I’m always having to fight them off as I’m trying to mix, he he! Basically, buy me loads of wine and I’m anyone’s!!
LF: Flattery will get you everywhere!! I am very much attached but I will never refuse a fan, male or female, a kiss/hug/photo etc... My boyfriend is totally understandable that it comes with the job!
