Jupiter Ace @UP^^

UP^^ will be bringing their unique brand of fiercely funky house to the Baby Box at the Saturday Sessions at the Ministry of Sound once again on Saturday 21st May and if it’s anything like the last two parties it’s going to be properly rockin’. Flying over specially to play will be the highly rated young Irish DJ and producer Jupiter Ace and his new single, 1000 Years is just about to hit the shops.
‘1000 Years’ looks set to catapult Jupiter Ace into dance music’s premier league and has already received radio support from the likes of Judge Jules on Radio 1 and Andi Durrant on Galaxy. Originally signed to Italian label Oxyd, it has now been licensed to Manifesto for a full UK release and looks set to well and truly do the business with its big funky bassline and outstanding vocal. There’s no stopping him, in fact, as he’s already recorded a follow-up for Manifesto, ‘Lovefreekz’, and ‘El Bebe Masoquista’ for Fatboy Slim’s Southern Fried label.
In fact, the Jupiter Ace has been producing music since 1999 and was quoted by NME as being ‘Northern Ireland’s best kept secret’. His reputation as a talented DJ and producer rapidly spread and he soon found himself performing alongside Utah Saints at U2's Kitchen club in Dublin. This lead to a nomination for ‘Best Newcomer’ at the Planet Love Awards 2001, and to showcase his productions he also set up his own label FI Recordings.
Remixes for Moloko, Dannii Minogue and The Dub Pistols soon followed, while more recently there have been Jupiter Ace remixes of ‘What U Got What U Do’ by Paul Masterson and the Bennassi Bros track ‘Digitally Stoned People’. He’s also been known to knock out the odd crafty bootleg too which he plays exclusively in his own DJs sets.
You can expect to hear an enthralling blend of funky and filtered house with some extra helping of electro, techno and trance when Jupiter Ace hits the decks at UP^^ this Saturday – the man NME also described as a ‘one man planet of sound’! Clearly there’s a story just waiting to be told here, so HarderFaster recently caught up with the man they call Jupiter Ace to find out more…
So, just who is Jupiter Ace?
My real name is Gregory Ferguson, I live in Belfast and I’m 25. I spent a lot of time writing songs and forming guitar bands when I was a teenager and then discovered electronic music. Being a bit of a techno-nerd I was very attracted to working with computers and synths instead of band members. Fast forward through six years of learning how to use my studio and here we are!
How do you describe the music you play and what qualities does a track have to make it into your record box?
When I’m buying records, I never buy the ones that are just ‘OK’ - they have to make my ass move, my head shake or make my eyes light up! I am not a fan of DJs who are playing to ‘educate’ the crowd or play music that is so ‘credible’ that it just bores the arse off the audience. I believe a good DJ plays music which they love and chooses what they play to accommodate the needs of their audience. I love some techno tunes, but I wouldn’t play them at somebody’s hen night! (Not that I do many hen nights, mind...)
Where else do you regularly play?
I play in Lush and other large clubs in Ireland fairly often. I’m also going to be doing a number of slots with Serious’ Dusted night including some Ibiza dates hopefully.
May 21st will see you in London playing for UP^^ at the mighty Ministry of Sound, what do you think you will bring to the night?
I would like to think that I offer an interesting mixture of the harder, more electro end of house and the funky side of things too. I’ve have had promoters and punters alike tell me it’s quite a unique style.
What does it feel like getting a chance to play at the Ministry of Sound?
I can’t wait, I’ve never been there before! There are some great DJs on in the main room too so I’ll be checking them out and having a bit of a party! I’ll be up for hearing Norman Jay, also Justin Robertson plays a good set.
Have you played in London before and what was it like?
I was playing at Dusted at Egg recently, and had an absolute blast! I was playing the end of the night set from 4-6am but the crowd stayed till the very end and were really into the set.
Who are your current favourite DJs, producers and labels?
I love Erol Alkan’s sets - he’s just so animated behind the decks. My top producer would have to be Steve Angello (who I think I’ll be playing with in Dublin soon). Also I’ve been quite inspired by Paul Masterson’s recent work as Subway, and Fuzzy Hai r — their remixes are just so solid and driving. Labels-wise, I really like the new stuff Manifesto are putting out - and I’m not just biased because they’ve signed my ‘1000 Years’ track!
Who have been your greatest musical influences?
Daft Punk’s ‘Homework’ album would have been my introduction into house. Non-house I’d have to say Kraftwerk, Human League and maybe Brian Eno too but mainly as a creative thinker.
Tell us about your production career so far?
Well, after putting some dance 12s out with a friend I got snapped up by Top Draw Music Management last year. Having a contact over in London whilst I’m in Belfast has proved invaluable — in the last 6 months I’ve remixed Fatboy Slim, two tracks for Positiva and a new track by Deux for Azuli among others.
And the forthcoming single, ‘1000 Years’?
This is probably the biggest moment of my career so far getting ‘1000 Years’ signed to Manifesto. I wrote the track in January of last year so it’s taken a while to get out there. Jules and other radio jocks have supported it for many months now which has really helped.
What have you coming up next?
‘1000 Years’ is released on June 27th, after which I think the clubs will be seeing a lot more of me. I’m currently working on a follow up to ‘1000 Years’ and beginning work on an album.
