seOne III birthday preview: interview with Marcus

All in all, the last 3 years have been a resounding success for the club formerly known as The Drome. What started life as an underground car-park beneath a railway bridge leading out of London Bridge train station then went on to become a popular venue for illegal raves for many years, before it became a licensed club as The Drome. This was a legendary but rather rudimentary club space that saw parties such as Antiworld and Raindance find their spiritual homes there in years to come. Following a change of ownership and extensive refurbishment, the former car-park was given a new lease of life when the 21st Century club space that is the seOne was born.
Just a week ahead of the club’s spectacular 3rd birthday celebration, featuring leading lights of the London scene such as Frantic, Raindance and Psygate/Antiworld, we caught up with one of the head honchos at SeOne, Marcus to get a behind-the-scenes perspective on the club and the forthcoming party. The SeOne has established itself as one of the most popular venues in the country which attracts only the most exciting and vibrant parties. After all, where else can you find a venue that plays host to hard dance events, old skool events, fetish parties, awards ceremonies and psychedelic music parties to name but a few? This party is shaping up to be a truly memorable night, and Marcus is as confident about this as I am...
So you work for seOne London, tell us a little about the club and its history?
As I’m sure you’re all aware seOne is three years old. These railway arches have been used for over ten years for clubbing. Famously known as the Drome for many years during the 1990s until 2001 as an illegal venue. Then 2002 saw the changes begin and now the last three years have seen the club morph into a 21st century venue.
What do you do at seOne?
I’m the Booking, Production and Marketing Manager. I also do more on top because we have a small team and I feel we have achieved a lot in the last three years. There’s no rest working in this game, but the rewards of seeing the venue go off makes it worthwhile.
With only a week to go until seOne’s III Birthday, give an insight into what we can expect?
What I hope to be an awesome party. With Frantic, Antiworld and Raindance hosting rooms alongside Just the One? and Marbles you should be in for a treat. So five sounds – hard house, trance, oldskool, house and breaks with 25 DJs including the Ratpack, Paul Glazby, Ed Real, Lisa Loud, Hyper and More. There’ll also be loads of entertainers and Birthday surprises. So don’t get left out in the cold!
How do you think it will be with all these promotions in seOne on the same night?
A great mixture of clubbers and sounds that compliment each other. This should be a good chance for many to wander into a different sound & get caught on the dance floor.
Where do your musical tastes lie?
I’ve been into so many genres and still am, but you can’t beat either dirty bouncy hard house or at my age some true house music.
Who are you most looking forward to hearing at the birthday?
Ed Real is an amazing DJ (Riot on a Sunday) and I spent years listening to Lisa PinUp at Freedom at the old Bagleys. But in the house room we have Lisa Loud with her dirty house for the first time at seOne and chew the Fat’s Paul Arnold playing at seOne also for the first time.
When you’re not at the club what do you do to relax and chill out?
I love clubbing and clubland so I put a lot into my job, but that’s part of having a job you love. Relaxing often is a Saturday night out – not in seOne! Otherwise it’s socialising with friends and a lot of beers at the pub.
What else goes on at seOne, is it similar events every week?
Every weekend is different; whatever genre you’re into you’ll find it at seOne every so often from live music to Soca and all genres of dance music.
What do you think of London club scene at the moment?
Fairly healthy. Of course it has its ups and downs, I’ve been to a lot of venues recently and they’re all full so I think London continues to be a pioneer and lead dance music in so many directions.
What will you be doing on Sunday after the party?
Having not been to sleep for far too long I’ll be struggling to watch TV’s greatest show, 24, I’ve only missed 4 episodes in four series!!
