Squelcher vs Guilt - an introduction to the promotion and interview with Orpheus Live PA!

Reported by Less is Bat / Submitted 27-05-05 19:12

When you read an event title as Squelcher VS Guilt you could be forgiven for thinking you are about to witness a bloody battle between two WWF wrestlers with eating disorders. This event, rather than a battle of promotion, is in fact a union of two promoters who have a huge passion for music and a dream of creating something different on the dance music scene in London. With a list of successful residents under their belts and a string of flourishing events, Squelcher VS Guilt looks set to provide us all with some excitement this summer.

On the 10th September 2004 Squelcher held its official Launch party at Deep Blue, SEOne. Although this was the official launch of the event, the promotion Squelcher has been in existence since April 2003 under the management of several promoters including Adam Cobbsky (aka DJ D4RK). Due to various issues outside of their control, the promoters were unable to secure a reliable venue that would hold their crowd until they struck gold (or blue) with Deep Blue. By this time the promoters involved had thinned down to just Adam with the help of Andy Grant (DJ Loki).

DJ Loki & DJ D4RK

The launch party was a massive success and the promotion team agreed that the perseverance had been worth the while. On the opening night a new player came to light in the Squelcher team, that of a DJ who they had booked to play on the night; Stuart Ainslie (aka N-Slay). Stuart began chatting to Adam about his ambitions to become a promoter in the scene. They shared similar visions and Adam had already decided to open a second room at Squelcher. It seemed a logical step that the two should team up and that Stuart should run the second room under its own promotional name – Guiltwas born! The 4th February 2005 saw the first collaboration of Squelcher VS Guilt. Through the addition of Guilt, Squelcher fans were offered another 5-6 DJs to choose to listen to at every event plus a whole new style to enjoy.

Adam Cobbsky (aka DJ D4RK): The co-promotion of Squelcher and Guilt has been very successful. We offer two different style of music and this has attracted a very interesting and incredibly friendly crowd. Between us we can get some great ideas on the production and themes. We provide contrasting styles between the two promotions/rooms, but we are one team dedicated to the sole purpose of providing quality Dance events.

Each of the Squelcher VS Guilt events have been spectacularly kitted out. This event is not just about the music, rather it's a celebration of the senses! From laser shows to LAK:UK Dancers, from fancy dress to the décor – the events are planned and designed to keep the concept of creating a magical experience for the clubber at its heart. Adam himself designs most of the artwork which is synonymous with the Squelcher VS Guilt parties. Both Adam and Stuart also play at every one of their events. As promoters there is no question about their dedication to music and hosting the best party they can muster.

DJ Loki & N-Slay

Stuart Ainslie (aka N-Slay): Squelcher vs. Guilt parties are about more than just turning up at a club and dancing to some music – we want people to enjoy all aspects of our parties, and leave wanting more! Hopefully in terms of music there’s something for everyone: we try to keep it as varied and interesting as possible. We want you to come back, and bring all your friends next time!

Squelcher VS Guilt is now a bi-monthly event each one with its own tailored theme. They have already brought us ‘Pimps and Hookers’, ‘Heaven and Hell’ and ‘Matrix’ themes and now Squelcher VS Guilt brings you ‘The Masquerade Ball’!

Doing a Live PA at the forthcoming event is the one and only Orpheus (now Squelcher resident). I caught up with him for a quick chat about his past, his involvement with the promotion and what he has in store for the Masquerade Ball!

Orpheus thanks for taking the time to chat with me. Let’s start with the basics… how old are you and where are you from?

I’m 36 years old, and live in the seaside town of Folkestone in Kent.

Where did the name Orpheus come from and have you always performed under that alias?

According to legend, Orpheus could manipulate living creatures and such with the power of his music, which is pretty much what I hope to do. I chose the name ORPHEUS not only for this, but for the truly courageous man that he was, the dedication he showed for the woman he loved, the battle he fought through the underworld, I believe that music is the most powerful thing we have; it can make changes, and already has.

And no, I have performed under a few different guises in the past...

When did your LIVE PA career begin?

My first live pa project was back in 1996 with a very good friend. It was an experimental techno pa called Phonic Mutator. It was loads of fun, and for two years we played at some of the most outrageous squat parties of that time.

Then in 1998 with four others, I formed Aural Resonance. We rapidly developed a name for ourselves and surprising us all, we began playing for some of the UK’s top parties, but later decided to go our own separate ways.

In 2001 I began working on a new live project, with another ex Aural Resonance band member, which became ORPHEUS 2. We played for 3 years at some of the UK’s finest underground parties, working alongside top names such as Lab 4, K90, Nuw Idol, BK, Tinrib, Darren Pierce, Nick Sentience, Simon Eve, Lisa Lashes and many more, also gaining residences for several large promotions in London and Bristol. In March 2003 we released our debut single ‘FLATLINER’ on Recover Records. Unfortunately this union was not to be and he split roughly 2 weeks before our debut album release in March 2004.

As Orpheus - live pa, I started mid 2004, as I already had gig commitments, I took the 2 off and began my solo live pa career, now I’m back playing for the likes of Antiworld, Party Proactive, Conscious, The Alliance, Implosion, Club Republic and Excessive in Bristol etc. and now Squelcher vs Guilt, things are looking good.

For those who aren’t familiar with your style can you tell us the kind of set you like to play out and what people can expect when seeing you play?

I write/produce and perform hard trance, although lately it’s becoming more hard dance. It’s all about taking people on a journey for me anyway, and I try to arrange my sets with equal quantities of dirt and euphoria, if that makes any sense. One things for sure though, nothing falls bellow 155bpm these days, and I do like to speed things up a little, and then maybe just a little bit more. Expect the unexpected.

So how did your involvement in Squelcher VS guilt come about?

I was just browsing through the what’s on guide on HarderFaster one day, looking for potential promoters to send demos too etc. I came across Squelcher VS Guilt, which I had heard all good things about, and got in contact with Adam/ DJ D4RK. As he was already in the process of organising the next line up, and didn’t have time for me to post him my latest demo, I sent it to him over msn, and I think all in all, within 2 hours I was booked to play. I have had a lot of contact with Adam since, and what I can say about him and his crew, is that they are very professional and dedicated, and put lots of their time and efforts into the production of there nights, in my eyes a recipe for success. And I'm glad to be a part of it.

Any hints about what we might expect from you on the night?

I will of course be handing out a few exclusive Orpheus at Squelcher promo CDs on the night. But only to those who form a nice orderly queue… (only kidding)!

My live set up consists of a Roland JP8000, Yamaha CS1X, Roland VS1880, 2.8Ghz Toshiba Laptop, Behringer DEQ1024 / MDX440, Lexicon MPX500, Aphex 104, 1 x 2tier keyboard stand and a 3tier Quicklock stand. And weighs at lot more than a box of records.

Do you prefer production or performance?

I work in the studio pretty much all the time now, as I said before I write and produce all my own material, and since signing to an agency it’s allowed me to do so more. but in answer to your question, yes I love to play out live, it’s the perfect testing ground for the tunes that I write, its just such a buzz to watch the crowds react to something I’ve written, it’s also very emotional for me too, the first time I played out on stage at The Stratford Rex and saw three thousand people with their hands in the air made me cry with happiness.

If you could do a b2b set with any other DJ who would you choose and which venue would you choose to play in?

Now that’s a real good question, what I would really love to do, is a b2b with another live pa such as Mark/K90 or Michel/Nuw Idol. I don’t believe it’s been done before, and it’s always been an ambition of mine. But if I had to choose a dj, then I would love to go b2b with someone like Proteus, he’s such an outstanding dj as well as a performer, and all round nice guy.

What are your plans for the future do you plan to try and make this your only career?

I am planning on making this my only career… fingers crossed…. god it’s what I’ve dreamed of for years, and what I’m working hard at for. I’ve just signed to the Free-Spirit production Agency who already host DJs Phil Able, Fabry & Toxigen, so that I can concentrate my efforts in the studio rather than do all my own promotional work. Don’t get me wrong though, I love talking to promoters, but half of my time I spend researching new clubs, new nights, phone calls, sending out CD’s etc. so I just feel its time to hand it all over to the professionals.

I have also just recently been approached by Xtreme Artist Management, who host such names as Madam Zu, Chris C and rising stars Clare Mclaren & Miss XS. I’ve also just received sponsorship by Swear Shoes/Camden as well. At this moment in time I’m talking with a large London based promotion, about releasing a live CD album later in the year, I have plans to do a collaboration with MISS XS in the coming months, and I’ve just been commissioned to do a dance remix for a gothic band called ‘einstifene’.

Anything else?!?

My own label has always been in the pipeline from day one, but I don’t really think that’s going to get off the ground till early next year... so watch this space!

When or what would make you retire from the scene?

Deafness, the loss of both arms, death or global thermal nuclear war... I think that about covers it. Music has always been my life, and I can’t imagine life without it.

What in your opinion is the worst thing about the dance music industry?

White gloves... whistles... and horns, burn ‘em all!!

Thanks Orpheus and best of luck at the Squelcher VS Guilt Masquerade Ball!
