Up close and personal with Ben Kakoschke — preview to Torque’s Red Planet Encounter

Reported by Dan Andres / Submitted 27-08-05 10:41

As one of the ambassadors of the hard dance movement in Melbourne, Ben Kakoschke has built himself a solid reputation as being a leader in his field. With over eight year’s experience DJing and gigs spanning the globe, Kakoschke devotes his life to the music scene he loves. Back in town for Torque’s Red Planet Encounter this Sunday, Dan Andres meets him for a chat.

Ben Kakoschke started DJing in London in 1997, committing himself to the music he had grown to love, and the London dance scene that was rapidly growing all around him. It wasn't long before he was playing regular gigs around London. In 2000 Ben left London to move back home to Melbourne, where he took up a residency at Frantic. It wasn't long before Kakoschke’s hard house sounds had filled the dance floors across many of Australia’s biggest dance music events and clubs. Securing a residency at Hard Kandy and also co-founding underground hard dance club BPM and in 2005 expanding the business and starting up yet another Melbourne brand of Events Company Redline.

BPM has changed the face of club nights in Melbourne, contributing to many large scale events such as Two Tribes, Godskitchen, Together (NYE), Sunshine People and SYSTEM6 (Adelaide). Pushing the limits in every set he plays, Kakoschke delivers an explosive blend of UK hard trance, hard house and hard dance.

What gigs have you upcoming in London?

Unfortunately this time around I’m only in London for a few weeks (instead of 3 years 97-2000). This Sunday I’m at Torque, I’m really looking forward to it as it’s a night with an awesome reputation (even in Melbourne) and has kept true to its underground roots since day 1. I’m then off to Spain and the Greek Islands to work on the tan, before returning for gigs at new night SPIN at 414 on 16th Sep and Warped on the 28th Sep.

What are your top 5 tunes at moment?

I haven’t come across too many outstanding tunes in recent weeks, but the ones that have been doing it for me over the last few months are:

1. ‘Streamline’ – Elasticman (Equinox remix)
2. ‘Free Your Mind’ – Edison Factor (Benny Drohan remix)
3. ‘Access’ –Justin Bourne & Dynamic Intervention remix Tripoli Trax
4. ‘Is Anybody Out There?’ – Edison Factor
5. ‘Hardcore Revolution’ – Kakoschke - Sixpointsix

What does the future hold for BPM and Redline?

For me and any other hard dance nut that’s had the London experience, BPM and Redline are pretty much the only nights left in Melbourne where ya can get ya UK hard dance fix. Frantic happens once in a blue moon now and is lucky to get 25% of the numbers it used to back in its glory days of 2000–2002. Hard Kandy’s weekly night is no more and other big nights Bass Station and Pharmacy still focus on the German sound (Scott Project, Hennes & Cold, Cosmic Gate etc). This is all fine for me, as it means BPM/Redline is doing its own thing and is always growing bigger and stronger whereas other nights are competing for a lot of the same market.

How does the Melbourne dance scene compare with London]s?]

Same same but different… (SE Asia travellers will be familiar with this saying)!!
The Melbourne scene is by far the most diverse and vibrant scene in Oz. The clubbers follow their ears rather than what’s trendy (sorry Sydney). Melbourne’s scene can be shaped depending on the quality of DJs and nights that are on. In regards to our population it probably has the most vibrant nightlife scene in the world.

Are you due to come back to London in the near future?

This is my second around the world holiday this year, so realistically I’ll probably be home in Melbourne for a few years to come, working for Mr Visa/Mastercard for a bit…..

We hear you have also started up a Melbourne based record company SIXPOINTSIX, how did this come about?

We figured it was about time a hard dance label started in Oz. The progressive, techno and house music scenes have all had quality local tunes come out on local labels for years. We wanted to create an outlet for local producers. Label partners include CJ Dolan (AKA Quench) of Dreams fame.

When your not organising events, behind the decks, or in the recording studio what fills up your time?

My girlfriend Jamie and Sport are the other loves of my life. I play Basketball twice a week. I’ve been watching my AFL team Carlton get there arses kicked all season, but on the flip side I’ve been watching my soccer team Chelsea absolutely dominate. For the record I’ve supported them for over 10 years!

Cheers Ben and thanks for the interview, we look forward to catching you play @ either TORQUE this Sunday or @ SPIN @ Club 414 on the 16th September.

The Red Planet is about to light up our skies! Earth is closing in on Mars in an encounter that will culminate in the closest approach between the two planets in recorded history. Astronomers can only be certain that Mars has not come this close to Earth in the Last 5,000 years, but it may be as long as 60,000 years before it happens again.

At the beginning of August Mars will rise in the east at 10p.m. getting closer to the earth every night.
This close encounter will climax on August 27th when Mars comes to within 34,649,589 miles of Earth.

In the night sky, Mars will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. NO ONE ALIVE TODAY WILL EVER SEE THIS AGAIN

… any excuse to have a party, especially on a Bank Holiday Sunday.
We’ve got a galaxy of top class guests who will be joining the Torque residents in providing you with a cutting edge soundtrack on top notch sound rigs.

In the Techno Tunnel we are proud to welcome back Chris Liberator, a dj who plays all over this world and never fails to impress with his out of this world sets. He will be joined by Torque residents, the man who is always Bang On and who has a sting in his tail, Thermobee. Looking sharp with the Afro and producing tunes that Kik, Finnie and the navigator on your journey, the one who sees the future Claire-voyant.

In the Hard Dance Hanger we welcome Neil M D who will be kick starting the rocket. Firing it up and putting you in the party mood. Twisted’s Trevor McLachlan then steps up to start getting jiggy with it and will ensure a smooth take off with all thrusters firing. The man who will take you to Mars is Ben Kakoschke from Melbourne Australia. Ben took to the decks when in London in the late 90’s and has been perfecting his craft in Oz whilst promoting long running hard dance night BPM. He returns on a short UK tour and can’t wait to take you to Mars and beyond. From there is there any way back? Macey will be looking to dip into the reserve tanks, slap it into overdrive and put you into another orbit.

The Fatt Funk room takes on an Irish rather than Martian feel as Gary Crehan and Neil Murphy from the Exposure crew are down from the land of Eire. Scaring off any leprechauns will be resident Eugene, and to cap things off there’s nothing like a bit of Floody around midnight.

Ah, BPM and Redline... I had some of my best Melbourne clubbing experiences at those nights - thanks! But when Ben says they're "pretty much the only places" you can get a UK hard dance fix in Melbourne I think he's forgetting Ignite!.
