New Year’s Day — looking forward to 2006 with Frantic’s Genesis AllStars

So you’ve heard about all their exploits, achievements, and biggest tunes from the year gone by. 2005 was a pretty tough year for the hard dance scene in a lot of respects, but not tough enough to stop a barrage of awesome parties every week, some great boundary-pushing productions, and the emergence of a new generation of superstar DJs, producers and promoters. Now in the second part of our Genesis NYD preview feature, we look to the future. What will 2006 hold in store? Who’s going to be big? What’s going to change? And will the bickering ever stop? Let’s see what our pundits think...
What have you got planned for the next year, so far?
Cally Gage: I intend to start having constant releases by getting into the production side of things more, I have an EP being released in May on AWSUM and I’m also looking forward to playing internationally — quite an exciting year ahead I think!
Lisa Pin Up: Loads more wonderful events, loads more tunes to come out of my studio, Australia plus loads of other countries.
Elvis: Busy Busy Busy! Along with pushing my DJing I will be launching a daytime party called Nu-Hype @ Hidden, Sat 28th Jan, which will be the first of many.
Oh and it will be a free party too……
Steve Maynard: No great plans as such, just to keep working hard in the studio, hopefully get some sets at different promotions in London and start playing out of London more.
Little Gem: 2006 will see the release of the Wildchild debut album, which I’ve mixed with K90 so that’s all very exciting! I’ve also got a whole host of wicked UK gigs lined up and my first taste of the international gigs lifestyle, which I’m seriously looking forward to! I’m also heading into the studio a lot more, doing some other collaborations as well as some solo work, so watch this space!
Also, Wildchild are venturing to pastures new, taking on different venues around the country as well as Wildchild in Ibiza and other jet set destinations including Asia!
What would you like to have achieved by the end of 2006?
CG: All that I mentioned and much, much more. would like to be sitting here this time next year being able to confirm that I have done everything that I set out to do and to have been able to give up my day job, yes!!
LPU: As it is the last gig of the new year celebrations there should be a big fun element to it. I would have been working really hard at venues all around country for the last 3 days, and this will be time for me to let my hair down and say farewell to 2005 and welcome in 2006. I know I will be in high spirits and will be spinning tunes more on a party vibe, people will be a little tired so I will be playing a lot of my favourite tunes from the whole of 2005 — it’s going to be one hell of a party!

SM: I’d like to start playing out of London more regularly.
LG: I think by the end of 2006 I’d like to have had some big production releases, I’d like to be able to say I’ve played at the biggest events in the country, and I’d like to be able to say I’ve continued to push the boundaries within Wildchild. Hopefully I’ll be lucky enough to achieve all this!
Who would you like to see make a name for themselves in 2006?
E: Seany Sean, Luke Warner and Shimmer.
SM: He’s well on his way already, but I’d like to see Richard Toomz start playing about a bit more.
LG: Em J & Sykes are a wicked duo from the Midlands that are offering something different to the scene. They’re talented and seriously nice girls to boot! I would also like to see James Condon make his mark as he has the potential, drive and ambition to go far!
What musical trends do you think we will be seeing in 2006?
CG: I think we’ll start seeing more euphoric, uplifting tunes coming out as it has all got a bit too serious and we need to start having fun again. I’ve already noticed a number of labels are starting to have bounce mixes on the B side of records, so hopefully this trend will continue and we’ll get back to the good ol’ days of Sundissential North and the like.

E: I am really not sure, there seems to be a lot of different directions with the music styles in the scene. Guess we will have to wait and see….
LG: Hmm, that is a difficult question! I think we’ll be seeing a lot more electro and tuff funky kind of stuff, as that’s all wicked and really doing the business at the moment! You’ll actually be treated to a special guest appearance in the funky room from myself at some forthcoming Wildchild events, so don’t miss it!
What changes would you like to see in clubland and dance music in the next year?
CG: I’d like to see hard house thrive like it has in London, but all over the country again, as it was a few years ago. Referring to my answer above, the peak of clubland was when Sundissential was thriving and everyone was having more fun, the music was fun and that’s all that people cared about. The changes I’d like to see happen is just for more club nights to run successfully all over the country and for everyone to have a smile on their face!
E: It’s a hard one as the scene is always changing. Though I have feeling 2006 will see some up and coming DJs and producers rising the ranks.
SM: Well with the sales of vinyl dropping so dramatically over the past year, some of my favourite labels have stopped putting tracks out (shortcircuit, Tripoli, Energy Uk). I know there’s not much that could be done about it but if people stopped illegally downloading tracks or ripping vinyl to CD it could make a small difference.
LG: I wouldn’t necessarily like to see any changes in clubland or dance music as I personally feel it’s the best it’s ever been. The standard of events out there in London especially, is superb so I just think it’s important to continue to strive to put on the best quality events out there and to make sure that clubbers needs are met, DJ line-ups are strong and production, sound, security, venue facilities etc. are spot on.
January 1st 2006 — you are all playing at Frantic’s Genesis at Koko in London. How do you find that New Year’s Day events differ from New Year’s Eve ones?
CG: I haven’t had the chance to play on New Year’s Eve yet, but I imagine that it is an amazing feeling as everyone is on such a high waiting for the New Year to arrive — luckily this year I have the opportunity and have been booked to play at the NEC on New Year’s Eve, it’s going to be awesome. As a clubber, I always looked forward to New Year’s Day more than New Year’s Eve, for some reason you seemed a little bit more excited to be out for that extra day which made it all the more fun. New Year’s Day tends to differ from New Year’s Eve because only the hardcore clubbers are still left standing!
E: I find NYE a bit of anticlimax and I tend to just go to a house party, sad I know!
Frantic NYD at Koko last year was my first New Year’s Day event and I loved it! Especially as they opened the 2nd room an hour early and asked me to play.
Shimmer and Elvis
LG: This event is shaping up to be a wicked party, which is the only way to kick start a new year in my opinion! I think the best thing about New Year’s Day events is that you’re not necessarily building it up to be some amazingly mind blowing event like people often do about New Year’s Eve events, but NYD always end up being amazingly mind blowing, which makes it even better! And I know that this IS going to be an amazingly mind blowing event, so everyone’s a winner really, hehe!
What has been your longest New Year’s celebration and do you think you will top it this year?
CG: I think the longest New Year that I’ve had was in 2003, me and my friends had pretty much been partying since Boxing Day but went and travelled half way across the country for New Year as well. New Year’s Eve was spent at the mighty Magna complex which was put on by tdy, we then went back to a friend’s house in Sheffield until we decided to make the trek up to Newcastle the next day for Goodgreef, which was on the Tuxedo Princess. I needed about a week to recover afterwards in my bed, but it was definitely worth it! I haven’t celebrated for that length of time again really, boring I know, but I need my beauty sleep now, lol!
E: This year will be the longest New Year’s celebration without a doubt! The way it is looking so far, it will top the year off nicely...
SM: Last NYD was a marathon but this year’s takes the piss. House party NYE, I am playing at Twist (Heat NYE after party) then will pop down to Insekt A.M for a bit. Then playing at Koko, then Byte at the Purple Turtle straight after that. Then I’ll be off to Frantic/ Twist at Hidden, then I am playing at Twist after that. Sleep is for losers!

LG: Ahem, this is me you’re talking about, so you can bet it was a long one! I couldn’t possibly disclose on a public website though, so you’ll have to try and get it out of me at Genesis! A couple of wines and I’ll blab to anyone, hehe! I think the odds are though, that I will probably top it this year… I mean, it would be rude not to, eh!
What’s it like being in such a massive venue like Koko for an afternoon event?
CG: The KoKo Club is my favourite venue ever, it is absolutely awesome. When you have an afternoon event there, it doesn’t actually feel like it is the middle of the day — weird! The place is full to the rafters, everyone still has so much energy left that it feels like it’s midnight the whole time that you’re in there — until you step outside and you are faced with that horrible sun, lol! (No need to worry about sun... Genesis finishes at 8pm! — Benz)
LPU: It always feels really naughty when you do gigs like this — you see normal people walking about outside the venue and it makes you giggle to think if they could see the madness that is going on within. You also know that everyone in the venue have been clubbing as hard as you the night before so you feel like you are all in the same gang, with a big connecting going on. It will feel a bit like when I used to do my last set every weekend at Freedom Bagleys back in the day when I did a 5.30–7am slot every Saturday, everyone has been clubbing for many hours so you just pull out those tunes that you just know will just make those tired legs have to dance which gives me a huge amount of satisfaction.
E: If it’s anything like last year it will feel exactly like a Frantic night event… quality!.
LG: Crazy! The place is just so amazing and nostalgic! I just can’t wait to get behind those decks and have some fun! And the fact that it’s in the afternoon just makes it feel like a wicked little adventure! Bring it on!
And finally, what one tune are you dying to drop at Koko on NYD?
CG: Now that would be telling wouldn’t it?!
LPU: I only just released an E.P on Nukleuz records with two of my own tunes on it called ‘Be My Lover’ and ‘Naughty Freak’ which I will be playing, but I have just finished a new one which I am really proud of called ‘Slave To Your Love’ and I can't wait to drop it in at club like KoKo with a huge crowd of clubbers infront of me.

SM: ... at the moment it would have to be Dave Owens — ‘Sour Crème & Chive’ and J.Nardi & J.Dwyer - ‘Mad Dogs’ (forthcoming on Flashpoint).
LG: Am I allowed another shameless plug? If I am, I’ll have to say my new track that I’ve done with Gaz West of Dark by Design fame. I’m very very pleased with it and have to say that I think it would rock on that Koko sound system, hehe!

Ok, enough of shameless, self indulgent self promotion… there’s loads of stuff I’ll be dying to give a spin, but top of the list will be the DbD mix of ‘The Dawn’ which is another class piece of tunage from Mr West and one that I think will bring together the feel of the day with people reminiscing but also looking forward to the new year ahead.
