Tina Martin talks about her debut at Polysexual South

If you’ve ever been to a hard dance event in London, or logged on to a dance community website, you probably have heard or seen Tina Martin. Not only has she worked for Most Wanted for the past two years helping to promote quite a few of their parties, she’s a familiar friendly face on the London club scene and also a budding and talented dj.
In a short time she’s already managed to strut her stuff in Ibiza and at popular parties such as Addiction; and now she’s landed herself a pretty plump set in the form of Polysexual South. Ahead of her Polys debut, which incidentally has a Bunny Girl Boudoir theme, we prised uni student Tina away from her study books, her turntables and the message boards just long enough to have a quick chat.
Many people on here will know you as a person who helped promote a variety of parties for Most Wanted. How did it turn to djing as well? Did this come out of promoting; or was it the other way around?
Hiya, yeah I’ve been working for Most Wanted for about 2 years now. I currently promote I Love VC, but have promoted various parties during that time. But it was before the first proposition to start promoting that I was already learning how to mix. Then through the experience, knowledge and contacts I gained through promoting my djing I became more serious.
I was very fortunate to be given an opportunity to play out which was a b2b set with Janie Mac — who’s also going to be playing at Polysexual South on 17th June, for Billy Bunter’s ‘The Edge’, which was at the 414 in August 2004. I was nervous as hell — and get just as nervous now — but I really enjoyed it, and it was one of the best experiences in my life, ever leaving me very hungry for more!
Have you been back to The Fridge yet since it was temporarily closed down? How did you feel about the whole thing and playing for Polysexual there?
I have indeed, I went for Innovate on Sat 20th. I was quite excited to get back in there and had a wicked night and thought The Fridge rocked just as much it did the times before. I love the place, and I’m glad it’s back.
I am obviously really looking forward to my first ever set there with Polysexual South and have no qualms about being at the venue at all. It’s been such a tease over the time I’ve worked and partied there to get the chance to play, and so I’m very thankful to the Polys girls to have finally been given this opportunity. I’m sure that with the full line-up Polysexual is offering it’s going to be an awesome night!
As a dj, what do you hope to achieve and how do you hope you’ll be different from other djs?
To eventually play somewhere like Dance Valley or to tour the world djing would be the most exhilarating experience of all; or in the summer I’d love to play on a beach of up-for-it clubbers when the sun is going down. That would be more than amazing for me! Obviously I’m a way off that yet lol!
And to answer the second part of the question, I’m very much a dj who likes to play for the crowd — I’m very fickle about progression and I suppose that comes from my knowledge and experience in promoting, and so wanting to give the clubber what they want on the dancefloor. To be able to take them on a journey through the music is very important to me.
As well as being a promoter and dj, do you also have a day job; and if so what is it?
Right this is where you start to learn about the manic life of Tina lol! Where do I start?! Well on top of the promoting, concentrating on the djing and the socialising which usually goes with it, I am studying a degree in Psychology — and to support myself in doing this I work part-time around my lecture hours.
For example my last job was working for a local government agency doing project management support, but I have just recently left and moved back to Kent so I can concentrate on my end of year exams — and also I get distracted very easily when I’m in London and always end up at a party somewhere! I have also of late started managing Pierre Pienaar (P.H.A.T.T.) (www.rebirth-productions.co.uk) and in the middle of arranging a UK tour, which as you can imagine entails a lot of day-to-day contact and admin work. My previous experience in the industry is proving very useful, but still it’s a big learning experience which I am actually really enjoying.
On your dj profile you cite Phil Reynolds as your biggest influence. Can you remember where you first heard him play and what is was that made you a fan?
Phil was one of the first hard trance djs I used to see play when I started clubbing in London in 2000, at Fevah and Frantic for example. Phil is just relentless in my eyes when he performs, and still to this day you’ll always find me having a good old stomp on the dancefloor when he’s playing! He basically hits the spot for me in every aspect when he plays . . . Phil rocks!
You’re very well known on forums such as HF. What are your thoughts on message boards. Do you think that they are a 100 per cent good thing; or do you think they spoil the air of mystery which used to surround clubbing?
Haha hmm yes I do tend to spend a lot of time on the boards, especially Harderfaster. I use the boards for different reasons, either to promote myself, my party, or to have a laugh with my friends. I’d say for definite, firstly, message boards have helped the growth and awareness of parties, djs etc., but apart from all the usual banter and fun it can be very informative about what’s going on in the world of music, which is why I feel we’re all on there at the end of the day — our passion for music. And lastly, what was probably the aim in the first place, to bring the clubbing community closer together.
To answer the second part of the question, I had just started clubbing on the scene when Harderfaster, for example, was born, and so can’t really comment what the scene was like before the boards.
You play both hard trance and trance? What is your favourite style?
If you had asked me this maybe half a year ago I would have said just uplifting to driving hard trance. But of late, I have been diversifying my style and establishing my trance sound — which is a combination of pumping, melodic trance with an occasional smidgen of vocals. I have always loved both genres, but I have realised the importance of being a diverse dj, and so have expanded the style of what I can play. I’ve yet to play out a trance set, but expect a trance demo by the autumn.
There has been some heated debate online recently about whether girls should use their looks to get on in djing. Do you think it’s fair enough that some female DJs do; or do you think it isn’t necessary.
In my opinion, a dj should definitely not make it just on looks. At the end of the day it’s about djing, and to be a dj you do need to be able to mix and have good knowledge of the music that you are playing, so looks alone in my opinion shouldn’t really just cut it.
But clubbers do seem to expect a variety of things when it comes to a dj, for some people they like djs to have that extra sex appeal, for others it may not matter, or they want the whole package. I suppose it’s going to vary depending on the individual.
There are heaps of djs out there. What do you think you can bring to the scene?
The scene is obviously very competitive with so many good djs, and like most djs, I’d like to think I bring my own individual essence to the scene and its dance floors with the music that I play.
Are you planning any production work and if so who with?
Yes I am, with Pierre Pienaar when he is over his UK tour end of next month. I’m very excited to be able to get in the studio and do collaboration and learn from Pierre. It’s going to be a fantastic opportunity!
Now for a few quick fire questions . . .
What’s in your fridge?
Boring stuff really — milk, bacon, eggs, cheese, ham, butter, garlic butter, sausage rolls, various salads, mushrooms, yoghurt, seafood sauce . . . (I love a good prawn cocktail) and the chocolate is in the naughty fridge along with the alcohol lol!
What was your first pet and what was its name?
It was hammy the hamster lol!
What’s the worst pick up line you’ve had used on you?
I’d go to the end of the world for you . . .
What was your reply?
Yes but would you stay there?!
Who is your hero?
Would have to be my mum!
