Full speed ahead as the Warp Brothers hit Andover!

Reported by K8-e / Submitted 27-06-06 22:18

If you put all the releases both Oliver Goedicke & Jürgen Dohr aka The Warp Brothers have made and include other collaborations, solo material, remixes, singles and albums over the last seven years, it totals over 750 records. Starting out in 2000, their first single ‘Phatt Bass’, made it to the #1 in several dance charts, shortly after entering the European-wide sales charts (#9 UK).

Success followed as the Warp Brothers wave swept over to the US, Canada, Australia and Japan. After releasing their fourth single ‘Cokane’ including the massive sample from Dillingers legendary ‘Cokane In My Brain’, they released their next corker ‘Going Insane’. Together with the former frontman of Public Domain, Mallorca Lee, The Warp Brothers featuring Red Monkey was a worldwide floor burner. One of their last releases included the legendary guitar riff from Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ and was signed to Ministry Of Sound, making it a worldwide club hit and anthem. Not resting on their laurels, the new single ‘Push’ is ready to go. It will be played live for the first time in Andover this Friday for Out of Order.

The Warp Brothers will be making a rare UK appearance at Out of Order @ The White Rooms in Andover this Friday on June 30th. Ahead of this exciting gig I wanted to get the low down on what was going on with the Warpies.

Hello, welcome to HarderFaster.net. How has 2006 been for you guys, what have you been up to?

So far so good. We had some great gigs like our up to date most amazing Australia tour and a fantastic New Year’s Eve in Tokyo. In March we decided to take a little touring break. We had a lot of studio work to do (Jürgen made a new Bad Habit Boys and Ollie produced the follow up to his last years dance corker ‘Pump Up The Jam’ by his other project D.O.N.S.). We finalised our album live in Sydney which includes a lot of new versions of our biggest hits and as well some new tunes. In April we started the production of our new single ‘Push’ which we just finalised a week ago.

When was the last time you played in the UK?

Actually this was in 2004. We played some great gigs, like in Blackpool @ Syndicat.

Back to the beginning, how did you both get into djing and producing and how did the Warp Brothers come about? Did the djing or production come first?

We both started as djs about 20 years ago and production started in 1996. We met in 2000 for the first time arranged by a label where we both have been signed to. At the first meeting we figured out that we have the same musical taste and the Warp Brothers were born. ‘Phatt Bass’ was the first single we released and the rest is history.

Where is your studio and how is it kitted out?

We have our own studios in different cities. Jürgen is based in Mülheim, a small city near Cologne, and Ollie is from Hamburg and has his set-up and his label Dos Or Die Records/Unlimited Sounds there.

You’ve done some pretty tasty remixes in your time such as: Nirvana — ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’, Norman Bass — ‘How Do You Like Bass?, Airheadz — ‘Stanley (Here I Am)’ and JFK — ‘Good God’. Do you have a favourite remix?

We still love our remixes for Black Spider — ‘Save Your Life’ and Kadoc — ‘The Nightrain 2004’ a lot. Another remix is Perfect Phase — ‘Slammer Jammer’ and Brooklyn Bounce — ‘Sex, Bass and Rock´n`Roll’

Is there a tune you would like to remix that you haven’t already?

I think under all our names we did remixes for we have a list of over 200 remixes we did. Of course there always tracks you’d like to remix. For the moment we would love to remix something from Kraftwerk but we think the chance is pretty much zero.

Under your D.O.N.S. guise you produced one of my favourite tunes last year, your own take on Technotronics ‘Pump Up The Jam’. Is there any more D.O.N.S material in the pipeline?

D.O.N.S. is the other project and DJ name of Ollie. Even though some people think that we are together on this project. Jürgen and Ollie did some D.O.N.S. remixes in 2002 together. But ever since Ollie decided to turn D.O.N.S. into a more house orientated project with a singer he is doing the production in Hamburg without him. Jürgen is focusing more on Bad Habit Boys again and released two new singles in the meantime. We basically only work together as Warp Brothers and sometimes in the past on other projects like Brain Twins — ‘Voice Of Buddah’ where we are thinking about a new single.

Regarding D.O.N.S. I just finished the new single ‘Big Fun’ which just have been released on Kontor Records on vinyl. An album is in progress and already the single after ‘Big Fun’ as well.

You’ve worked closely with Mallorca Lee, from Public Domain in recent years. And in fact you released a mix on Central Energy (13) with Public Domain last year down under, seeing each of you take a CD each. How did you all that come about?

Mallorca is a great guy and at some point we decided to contact him. Everybody thought that we kinda have been enemies because of Public Domain’s — ‘Operation Blade’ track and our ‘Phatt Bass’. We never had any bad feelings against them/him and vice versa. So when we produced ‘Going Insane’ we thought having Mallorca as an MC on this track would be a killer idea and we contacted him and guess what . . . ? He was up for it. We did a second single ‘Blade’ right after ‘Going Insane’ which has been released in 2005. For ‘Blade’ he even performed in the video together with us. He is simply the best MC for our kind of music and a legend from back in the days. Ahh, forgot to mention that we did a remix for Ultrasonics ‘Anihilating Rhythm’ before we worked on ‘Going Insane’ with him. For this remix we worked for the first time with his vocals.

Have you ever done live PAs as the Warp Brothers, is that something that interests you?

We did and it wasn’t too bad. We are still thinking about extending the PA think but nothing is decided yet.

You regularly play at gigs around the world. What’s the most unusual thing that’s ever happened to you during a gig?

The most unusual things mostly happen after the gigs to be honest but due to your question we don’t have to make these details (and there have been a lot, lol) public. During a gig we as well had some quite unusual things. We played a lot in the USA and usually we know the clubs or at least have the info you need to play there. We once didn’t take care about this simple rule on a USA tour and we had two gigs on this tour which have be pretty unusual. One club which booked us thought for some reason we are a rock act. When we arrived at the club we were kind of confused because the audience was pretty unusual for dance fans. Obviously the club wasn’t very packed because nobody heard of the Rock Band The Warp Brothers. To cut a long story short, we played for two hours and the most people we had on the floor have been around 20. Nobody killed us but the list of people asking us to play Nirvana, Korn and associates have been very very long.

On the same tour we had the same situation in a Hip-Hop club which was jam packed. In this club we made it and had great party but we thought they really gonna shoot us from stage. The last track before we got on was from 50 Cent. But somehow we turned a couple of hundred hip-hop freaks into hard trance/progressive maniacs.

When you look back at the time you’ve spent together what are your proudest achievements as a duo?

That we really produced tracks together which made it around the globe carrying us as djs with them. We started not even six years ago as nobodies and so far we have seen so much and have been to so many places which we think is something to be proud of and we are not done yet. Another thing is that we established our own unique sound which makes us a little proud too.

You’ve been working together so many years now you must know some good secrets about one another? Tell us something we don’t know about each other?

A secret is a secret because nobody knows them. Well, Jürgen’s secret to tell is that he is afraid of the dark and Ollie’s is that he can’t swim!

On 30th June you will be making a rare UK appearance at Out of Order. What can clubbers expect from your set?

Annihilation on the dancefloor, banging new tunes, a party behind the decks and the world premier of our new single.

So what are you waiting for? For the first time in 2 years the Warp Brothers are playing in the UK and premiering their new single. You’d be crazy to miss it. See you on the dancefloor!
