Audio London presents Together resident Anil Chawla

With the rise and subsequent fall of the superclub, and the increasingly ‘democratic’ nature of the digital download revolution and wider availability of music production technology, it has certainly become somewhat easier for new dj/producer talent to break through. Anil Chawla is one of the new generation of UK house music stars who have benefited from these changes. A versatile dj who plays right across the house music spectrum, he gained fame with his superb demo CDs that illustrated his deep-rooted understanding of the genre, and over the last couple of years has continued to gain momentum with a slew of gigs that have steadily become bigger and bigger in profile.
A Mixmag Future Hero no less, Anil has been a resident in some shape or form at Turnmills for a couple of years now, being vaunted as one of their bright new hopes for the future. Praise from the likes of Tall Paul and Nic Fanciulli have been justly deserved following his first forays into production and have helped to build upon his already solid reputation.
In their mission to bring you the best new house and electro talent around, Audio London are pleased to be bringing him to the debauched surroundings of The White House in Clapham this Sunday 6th August. We brought him in to find out just how he managed to bag that prestigious residency, and to get to know this rising star a little better . . .
You’ve made quite an impression on the London house music scene in the past couple of years, heralded as one of the hottest talents around. How did it all start for you?
I started DJing at uni with Dan Kilcoyne (who runs Divine Odyssey), where we held a weekly residency at our union. That was great fun and definitely invaluable experience. Moving to London just over 2 years ago has really helped with things as most of the stuff I do is London based. Also, getting a few tracks out there and signing to Sedition has opened up some doors.
You’ve obviously got a deep-rooted love of all things house, and have clearly been influenced by some of the genre’s pioneers. Who have you always looked up to, and who helped to shape your sound?
I used to dj with the Club Class crew in Maidstone a couple of years back (Nic Fanciulli, Mark Knight and Sam Ball) and it’s fair to say they’ve all been influential with my sound. I do spend a lot of my time in clubs so always try and keep an ear out for what sounds good.
How did you manage to crack into the London house music scene? Hard graft or a lucky break? Or a bit of both?
Certainly a bit of both. The first time I ever played for in London was for a night called It Would Be Rude Not To at Play Bar in Old Street; which came through a friend of a friend. From there on, one of my mix CDs found its way to Gavyn @ Turnmills and he gave me my first break playing for The Gallery. The people at Turnmills have always been great and really supportive, so I owe a lot to Stix, Gav, Danny, Ed, Nik and the rest of the guys down there.
You became a resident for Turnmills a while back, starting off at City Loud and now at Together. Has your sound changed accordingly?
Predominantly, my sound has always been house, and it’s always fun to play about with different styles . . . some deep/soulful stuff for City Loud, tech/progressive for the Gallery and a healthy dose of twisted grooves for Together! The sound I play is always changing though and I like to mix things up a bit, but for now, it’s along the lines of deep/techy/acid flavoured house, and I’m starting to appreciate techno more and more lately.
How did you manage to land the residency in the first place? You must have been over the moon . . .
I’d played Together a few times before, doing warm-ups, and I did a last minute fill in for John Dahlback a few months back. Recently Stix from Turnmills phoned me up to say that they’re taking me on as a resident, and to use your phrase, I was indeed over the moon and to share the resident title alongside Justin Robertson is pretty mad!
It is a great honour, because it’s genuinely one of my favourite nights in London. Together is so far ahead of the game, it’s unreal (in terms of bookings, live acts, retro video games and bingo!). I get to dj alongside and meet so many amazing DJs/producers . . . . . Last Saturday, I was doing shots of Bourbon with Abe Duque and got to meet an all time hero of mine, Josh Wink. Also, bit of a plug but can I recommend that people sign up to the Together pod cast; where you can get mixes from Motor, Justin Robertson and some dude called Anil Chawla. There are also forthcoming mixes from Fischerspooner, Headman, and Abe Duque.

The dj booth at Turnmills is pretty bloody nifty. Would you say it’s the best in the world?
It’s probably the best I’ve ever played in, mainly because the monitors in there are outstanding. The only problem used to be that I’m too short to actually see the crowd (the booth was built for Tall Paul and I’m only 5’8!). However, as of last Saturday, this has been rectified with the use of one of those ‘step aerobics’ things to give me a little boost, and I can now reach the eject button on the CDJs, without having to tip-toe!
You production career has got off to a good start. What tracks have you had released so far and who have they been big with?
I’ve only actually had one EP release so far (the one on Saved Records), the rest of the stuff has been remixes (for Tall Paul, Stu Hirst, The Cheshire Catz and Timo Garcia). I am doing a lot more solo stuff at the moment and have got my first two solo tracks out in September; on Cr2 and Twisted Frequency.
Everyone I could ever hope for has been playing and charting the tracks; Hernan Cattaneo, Pete Tong (who played the Tall Paul remix twice on Radio 1), Paolo Mojo, Nic Fanciulli (who used ‘Makes Me Feel’ on his Renaissance compilation), James Zabeila, Funk D’Void, Greg Vickers, Tom Stephan, Chris Lake, Audiofly, Mazi and James Talk, to name a few.
You are playing for one of London’s hottest new nights on Sunday 6th August — Audio at The White House. Have you had many experiences at this Clapham hotspot?
I’ve been down there a couple of times on Sunday eves (one bank holiday I remember got particularly messy). There’s always a nice vibe about the place, and I’m looking forward to a few Shandies out on the terrace.
Are you one for more traditional clubbing timetables or are you often to be found in some cheeky little party on a Sunday when you really should be in bed?
I have been known to frequent the odd after-party, but not so much lately, I think I’m getting too old . . . I’m due a second wind soon though!
Are you hitting any of the festivals this summer? The festival market seems to be rather saturated this season . . .
I’m planning to do Get Loaded in the Park, I’m really keen to see Babyshambles live and Howard Marks doing one of his infamous talks. I’ve been for the last couple of years and it’s always been a great day out.
I’ll also be making my first trip to Bestival this year, as I’ve heard so many good reports about it and I’m pretty intrigued to see what it’s all about.
What club nights in London would you recommend for anyone who is curious about the whole house/electro scene? I think there’s quite a few people on this site who are eager to try something along these lines...
Club Class @ Ministry, Dusted @ Egg and Renaissance @ The Cross are definitely nights that I’d recommend.
Audio is all about pushing new UK house/electro talent. Who are you tipping for the top this year?
The Electric Press, James Talk, Sam Ball, Mark Fanciulli, Simon Baker, Sonny Wharton, Dave Robertson, Dale Anderson, Stu Hirst, Tim Davison, Mark Sun, Alex Parsons and Pete Dafeet. They all rock!

In next to no time, Audio London has become the capital’s most talked-about Sunday afternoon shindig – rocking Clapham’s legendary Whitehouse on a bi-weekly basis. Audio London combines line-ups featuring the biggest new stars from the capital’s house music scene and uber-talented residents like Jnr J with crews from some of the finest parties around, tons of sexy, happy party people, and a sumptuous venue. All the ingredients come together to make for what has becoming the new Sunday Service – a party for house music lovers that won’t mess up your body clock or break the bank.
This Sunday 6th August we are bringing you a super-hot line-up – featuring Ibizan hero Oliver Lang from Dusted, Turnmills regular Anil Chawla (hotly tipped by both Tall Paul and James Zabiela), Lee Jarvis and the Moochin crew & the Funkilicious crew up on the terrace and Cooley. Not bad for £5 eh! Entry to Audio only costs this much on the Paying Guestlist – just over what a bottle of beer will cost you in some of London’s other clubs – and you can secure your place by emailing chloe@ninetynine.org.uk in the weeks proceeding the event. Just give her your full name and which date you are interested in and we’ll do the rest!
The venue has 2 beautifully kitted-out rooms of music with a well-stocked bar, damn fine food, and lots more to keep you entertained. The gorgeous roof-top terrace is without a doubt one of the sharpest-looking outdoor bar/club areas in London, and if you fancy going for a bit of class, there are 7 VIP Booths available to hire. Just drop chloe@ninetynine.org.uk an email if you want one.
What’s more, if you are celebrating a birthday, then we can give you and a friend FREE entry to Audio London! We can also book you a booth for parties of anywhere between 6 and 16 people.
