Tasty’s 5th Birthday and the battle of the brands
Reported by e99

Submitted 30-11-06 15:54
Tasty’s biggest party to date is rolling in to town this Saturday with the help of some of the country’s leading club promotions to give a truly national representation of the hard music scene. London house/electro heroes Digital Love, Midlands party-nutters B2T and Nailed, Global Gathering highlights Contagious Clubwear, hardcore legends Fusion and the South Coast’s finest — Hard South. We got the people behind these club brands to give us the lowdown on what they are all about — and what they’re going to be bringing to Tasty.
Digital Love: Damian Henshaw
How long has your brand been going for and what’s it all about?
Digital Love has been going for about 6 months now. We launched it because we are fanatical about house music and it’s been a dream of mine to run a funky/electro brand!
Who are your DJs and what are their special powers/strengths?
We work with many DJs such as Neil The Pornstar — he is the daddy! If you have seen him out you will know what I’m talking about! We work with many up and coming DJs such as Audio Dice, Ajay and many more!
What’s been the best party you have been involved in or thrown?
Erm that’s a tricky one! We have thrown a few parties since we launched the brand. We have worked closely with HeatUK. We hosted a room at Brixton Academy earlier this year and it was such an amazing party… it was something I won’t forget in a hurry!
What’s the one track that never fails to set your crowd on fire?
Has to be the new bootleg of the Killers — ‘Mr. Brightside’.
Nailed: Jack Richards
How long has your brand been going for and what’s it all about?
Nearly two years. It’s all about the music, especially the DJ/producers that are about making their own sounds. Nailed prides itself in taking risks on new talent in the hard dance world, mixing well established names with people playing sometimes for the very first time. As long as they are putting their heart and soul in to it and doing their own thing we are happy to give them a platform.
Who are your DJs and what are their special powers/strengths?
Our DJs for the Tasty event will be:
Princess SKB, whose strengths are her unique productions, cheeky bootlegs, tight mixing, interaction with the crowd and her power to treat the smallest grubbiest club with an almost empty dancefloor exactly the same as the plushest rammed club with the same enthusiasm. Extra strength: being able to do it on Friday/Saturday and again on a Sunday morning!
Dion: His strengths are his adaptability in his choice of music. Wherever or whatever time he plays, he comes up with the goods — another of our new producers not for the faint hearted. Powers: towering at well over 6ft this man has many powers but his greatest is no matter how big he gets, this man’s feet are firmly on the ground and he is genuinely on of the nicest blokes you will meet!
What’s been the best party you have been involved in or thrown?
At Nailed there have been so many, and most are special in one way or another — and running weekly it gets hard to separate them!
What are you and your crew going to add to the Tasty experience?
If we can add a little it would mean a lot but we will certainly be adding two of the best DJs that Nailed has the pleasure of calling “ours”, and a lot of nutters we call “Nailers”!
What’s the one track that never fails to set your crowd on fire?
For the last seven months, ‘Propa Arctik’.
Contagious Clubwear: Claire Frances
How long has your brand been going for and what’s it all about?
I could go on for hours….but I will try and keep it short and sweet!
Heavily influenced by the club scene, Contagious was born in 2003 after I designed a range of clubwear, had a website built to sell it on, and found a manufacturer in China to produce it in bulk. Twelve months later manufacturer number two (this time UK based) came on board. Contagious was being sold worldwide, was available to buy in outlets round the UK and was now involved heavily with the modified car scene, producing super sexy outfits for promo girls, working with companies such as Max Power and Kicker Audio.
In 2004 a local based modified car festival Weston Wheels invited Contagious to host a dance tent at their festival. This proved to be a huge success, and the following year we were asked back to run one of the main dance tents. By this time we had our own team of models, entertainers and dancers who all took part in our first ever Contagious show.
At the beginning of this year Contagious became involved with Angel Music Group, helping them promote Escape to the Park and providing the Kicker Hummer truck and dancers for the Swansea-based festival. On the back of this we secured an outdoor sound stage at the almighty Global Gathering Dance weekender. This was the chance to show what Contagious could really do, and boy did we rock it!
We designed the stage ourselves to fit in with our show, put on some of the most talented and up and coming hard dance DJs on the circuit, including Lisa Pin Up, Andy Whitby, Alex Kidd and JP and Jukesy. Our team of 20 strong entertainers danced and performed non-stop throughout the event providing some well received eye candy and visual stimulation for the up for it crowd we drew around us most of the weekend. The buzzing atmosphere was electric. I never had such a feeling in my life. The whole team worked their butts off the whole weekend making Contagious one of the biggest success stories of Global ‘06, and we will be back bigger, better and louder than ever in 2007!
On the back of this success we have teamed up with Billy “Daniel” Bunter and his now legendary Tasty brand for their 5th Birthday party at the Renaissance “Rave” Rooms on December 2nd, where we will be hosting the main room adding our unique style of entertainment and décor to the sell out event. This is one not to be missed, as we plan to bring some of the hype we created at Global to one of London’s best loved dance events.
As for the future, well watch this space. We are hosting our first solo event on Boxing Day at the Syndicate Superclub in Bristol featuring Andy Farley, Amber D, Andy Whitby and Cally Gage supported by the ever impressible Funk Deluxe in the second room. With more of our special blend of entertainment and visuals this promises to be a real Christmas Cracker.
Who are your DJs and what are their special powers/strengths?
Our resident DJ and saviour of hard house is the absolutely incredible talent that is Mr Andy Whitby, always armed with his crowd rocking acapellas and a mind blowing array of mixing techniques! His high energy style always gets the whole place bouncing. He commands the stage with his presence — a true performer!
Sam Hudson & Nick ‘The Bongo Man’ Fisher — this duo are a unique combination, mixing chunky beats, funky bongos, specialised intros and home made tracks, they sure know how to put on a show. They rocked the crowd at Global, and are just bursting with energy to make Tasty truly Contagious!
Caz Wood — Contagious has introduced a hot new chick to the scene. Her style is uplifting, bouncy and fun. And, she looks awesome in Contagious Clubwear! Keep your eye on her, she’s definitely one for the future.
What’s been the best party you have been involved in or thrown?
It’s got to be Global. The sun was shining, my girls were dancing, the tunes were banging and the crowd just loving it. It was a life-changing experience standing on that stage looking out on a bouncing sea of mad for it festival-heads. Not even the rain could stop Whitby. We held the biggest crowd of the outdoor sound stages throughout the event, and I must admit, it even brought a tear to my eye!
What are you and your crew going to add to the Tasty experience?
The Contagious experience! Incredible décor, wicked dancers and sexy promo girls dressed to kill in my very own lycra, PVC and fluffy creations, fire entertainers and stilt walkers plus lots and lots of free giveaways. We’ve got DJs to blow the roof off, and well if Global’s anything to go by, the Contagious brand will get every one addicted to dance and gagging for more. Bring it on!
What’s the one track that never fails to set your crowd on fire?
Underworld’s ‘Born Slippy’ — it’s a bit of a goosebumper innit!

Hard South: Nick
How long has your brand been going for and what’s it all about?
Brighton-based Hard South is undoubtedly the most successful hard dance promotion in its part of South East England. Founded in September 2003 by myself and Russell with the very active participation of Honey Club owner Gary Turner, Hard South has now reached a point where it regularly attracts over 800 stomp crazy members of the Hard South Massive (Rule No 1 — “No Stopping At Any Time!”) to its monthly parties, and the numbers are growing all the time. It originally started because I had loads of friends who were desperate for some hard dance on any night other than a Sunday. Hard South has faced various challenges, including Russell leaving to join the Police Force (poacher turned gamekeeper anyone?), but continues to go from strength to strength, attracting more people now than at any time since it started to the recently and impressively revamped Honey Club.
Hard South’s residents, Krunchie, DJ Twisted, Salerno and DJ Drummer have all been with the night since the start. They are all excellent DJs with a real passion for their music and a massive appreciation of the incredibly loyal and very knowledgeable Hard South crowd. There is a genuine family feeling about all Hard South events (one of the regulars has been known to bring his 80 year old Mum!) and the brilliant, totally up for it, super friendly and completely accepting atmosphere has been regularly commented on by luminaries such as Andy Farley (who also called Krunchie the best warm-up DJ in the UK), the Tidy Boys, Ed Real, BK, Lab 4, Proteus, and Rob Tissera — who all love the night and are quite happy to say so.
Ask either of us why the night works so well, and we’ll tell you that the day we start believing that Hard South’s success is down to him is the day it will stop. All I do is book the DJs and make the club available — the atmosphere and attitude is down to our incredible crowd. Without them, we haven’t got a thing, and I’m glad we’ve got friends not customers. The over-riding philosophy behind the night remains what it always has been since day one; to give people what they want (a damn good party) at a price they can afford, hence Hard South Rule No 2 — “It’s not about the money, it’s all about the party.” Come and check the night out on the first Friday of every month (except January) at The Honey Club in Brighton. If you love to party, you’ll be extremely welcome!
Who are your DJs and what are their special powers/strengths?
Krunchie — flawless deck technician with massive musical knowledge and an unassuming genius. Massive Party Attitude.
DJ Twisted — he’s ever crashed a mix, the man who’s always got that monster party classic. Massive Party Attitude.
Salerno — technically excellent, more enthusiastic than an enthusiastic thing that’s been to Oxford to study enthusiasm. Massive Party Attitude.
DJ Drummer — superb skills, inventor of ‘scratch house’, can play any style, any where. Massive Party Attitude.
What’s been the best party you have been involved in or thrown?
The next one, or if you really push us maybe the Tidy Big Night Out, or Lisa Lashes, or the RIOT! tour, or Proteus & Ting, or any time Rob Tissera plays, or the Hard South Birthday Bash, or maybe our annual January Resident’s mash up, New Year’s Day in 2007 and, as always, a mere £5 entry. Well it is the season for January sales...
What are you and your crew going to add to the Tasty experience?
We’ll be adding Krunchie and Salerno — and some Massive Party Attitude!
What’s the one track that never fails to set your crowd on fire?
There’s too many to list to be honest....
Hard South is one of those parties where the crowd appreciate hearing new stuff at least as much as they appreciate classics, in fact probably more so, though Superfast Oz’s remixes (of almost anything) have always been popular.
Fusion: Jon Brown
How long has your brand been going for and what’s it all about?
Fusion as a brand name has been going for over fifteen years now and was at the time of its launch, one of the original hardcore parties. I’m sure many of the original hardcore ravers that you speak to today will tell you that they have many fond memories of the Fusion parties and everything they represented at that time, utilising the talents of legends such as Slipmatt, Hixxy, Sy, Dougal, Druid, Ramos, Supreme, Ratpack and many more. At this point Fusion was the pinnacle of hardcore playing all over the country, including the massive Wembley Arena parties.
Fusion has come a long way since those hedonistic days and today recognises its place as one of the originators of top drawer hardcore parties. In April this year, they went through a re-brand and a bit of a re-launch and what a welcome that has received… and from there it’s gone from strength to strength!
The new generation Fusion started with a chance meeting between Jeff Shields aka Supreme (one of the originators) and Rus Turbulence at a Fusion vs Prophecy party last year. Rus is MD of Turbulence Records and had also been promoting events for near on a decade and Supreme was head of Fusion at this stage. After a successful meeting between the two it was decided that not only would Fusion be re-branded and re-launched for 2006, but also they would work together on a new label imprint THC Records (Turbulence Hardcore), which already has eight releases on its schedule, all of which are highly anticipated tracks and including the almighty Paradise (of ‘See The Light’ fame) as one of its artists. It was from here that an alliance was formed and Fusion is and stands for what you see it as today, a massive party with the very best artists, excellent production, great atmosphere, happy faces and as Druid once quoted in a recent press interview,“The best party in this area by far.” We can’t ask for anymore than that really!
Who are your DJs and what are their special powers/strengths?
We are very lucky to be blessed with some of the best residents really. Obviously as a brand we have the strict residents that form the core part of what we’re doing here, who are of course Ramos, Supreme, Sunset Regime and Project Bosh, but we also have regulars who play for us every event, some of which have been with Fusion through the entire decade and a half journey such as Sy, Druid, Dougal and Hixxy and so forth, so there’s a variation.
So far as their special powers and strengths, for Ramos and Supreme it’s definitely teamwork and even more so when Sunset Regime is added to the mix — those boys have a real flow to what they are doing, you know? They have been rocking it for a long time and have built that level of commitment to what they are doing up through that, to their music, in the studio, on the console and it works well on a crowd I think. People definitely enjoy seeing these guys play; they bring something new to the set every time and play along with it. One of their biggest strengths of course is that as the boys (along with Rus Turbulence) behind THC Records, Ramos and Supreme have always got brand new THC material in each set and people really look forward to that. Just the other night at Fusion — Phase 3, they tore off the roof with a brand new Trinity tune. They do it every time — it’s their parlour trick and people really love all that.
No less than Project Bosh, who make a point of entertaining their crowd with entertaining costumes, not taking the whole business end of the scene too seriously and just enjoying their music and sharing that with their crowds without arrogance or prejudice, makes things fun for everyone.
What’s the best party you have been involved in or thrown?
That might be a mixed answer depending on which one of us you ask! We reckon however, speaking for the entire brand and group Fusion Phase 3 has been the best so far, because it grows with each one. We know that even we have to grow with each event and that each time new lessons are learned that help us make the next one better and the next one better and so each time our crowd says, “Guys that was wicked... what’s next?” we have to retaliate and think “Ok, how we do we top that?” and act on that accordingly. We believe so far that we’ve done that and that as each ‘episode’ passes, they get stronger, louder and more entertaining. So yes... Phase 3 so far.
What are you going to add to the Tasty experience?
Well, for this one we are going to try and pack everything you love about Fusion into one room! Keeping it hardcore of course, but we have our residents Ramos and Supreme with MC Marley on board and our very own signing to THC Records, Mandy from Paradise who will be singing ‘See The Light’ which is always a showstopper, every time just brilliant viewing if you’ve not had the pleasure. For those of you that have never seen Mandy live, have a look around on YouTube for some of the home made ‘Digital Circus’ videos on people’s mobiles. That’s the power of Mandy’s voice, 2000 people all singing along with her, not only the chorus, but the entire song. It’s absolutely goose bump inducing!
We’ve also got some friends joining us, who we regularly see on the main stage at Fusion, such as Tasty head honcho Billy “Daniel” Bunter, HTID’s ‘The Boss’ and award winner Hixxy and plenty of live music, including the gorgeous Lou Lou on a live PA with Unknown doing a one hour set (and if it’s anything like the one he closed Fusion with on Friday, you are in for a treat!) and more live music from Darren Styles and MC Junior plus a DJ set — these boys are really doing it right now, especially Darren. He’s due for a chart hit with ‘Save Me’, as well as an artist album on the way on All Around The World! Sytronik, Sketchy, Smyrky & Sereya will also be in attendance, ripping the roof off the Renaissance for a night of all out hardcore madness!
CLSM will be performing as well as a PA with Nikki Mak performing ‘Take Control’, and we’ll have a selection of MCs on rotation including new school sensation MC Casper, who you really cannot miss. He definitely brings something fresh to the hardcore scene as a genre and it’s a pleasure to have him with us, as well as our friends and regulars Marley, Chit Chat and Spenno.
We would say, taking stock of that line-up, we’re bringing our share of the goods to the almighty Tasty brand and it’s an absolute honour to be invited to be part of their special night
What’s the one track that never fails to set your crowd on fire?
I guess we kind of covered this already but we’ll say it again none-the-less, Paradise — ‘See The Light’. Initially, we had never seen a record get such a strong reaction from a crowd in all our collective years — it’s been a journey with that tune for sure. If we could pick a second to that then ‘Silver Water’, which is actually starting to get the same reaction the more it’s played, the crowds out there are getting used to the lyrics and we’ve got some awesome sing-alongs happening with that on peak time sets. Both of those are of course Turbulence Records (out on promo this week) and THC Records (due for release early in 2007) releases and it’s an exciting time for both labels and in being so... for Fusion as the event that precedes the label, we’re enjoying where we are going with it and hope to bring that to the table when we join Tasty on the 2nd.
Happy Birthday Tasty!
B2T: Strange Dave
How long has your brand been going for and what’s it all about?
B2T has been going for just over a year now and it keeps going from strength to strength. It’s has been hard work, but me and my partner Live Wire are more than happy with the way things are going. I mean we have built such a strong loyal following over the last year and when you see everyone going for it at B2T it makes all the hard work worth while.
Who are your DJs and what are their special powers/strengths?
Representing B2T will be myself and Live Wire. To us it’s all about the party, getting people dancing and going for it. We will be armed with some of the finest classics and bootlegs that are guaranteed to make any one smile.
Also from the B2T stable we have our new blood residents John Vyse b2b Kye Shand. These two are special lads — we found them at the local special school running around with their foreskins over their heads pretending to be petrol pumps. They have some tricks in store, you’ll just have to come and see.
What’s been the best party you have been involved in or thrown?
We have had so many wicked parties but B2T’s finest hour was our 1st birthday — that was a night we will never forget.
What are you and your crew going to add to the Tasty experience?
B2T is all about good times and good vibes. We have a coach load of the most loyal B2T ravers travelling down and I promise these guys are ready to stomp for England. We have some wicked stuff in line for Tasty, we really can’t wait.
What’s the one track that never fails to set your crowd on fire?
Hummmmmmmm that’s a touch one, I think I’ll save them as a surprise on Saturday!
