The *Ting* gets ready for the final countdown of 2006

Reported by Tara / Submitted 29-12-06 11:52

It all started for The *Ting* aka Zoe Hart back in 1999 when she threw her first ever event, Tranceformation, and became the first promoter ever to take on the whole of SeOne, pulling in over 2500 people. From there she became a resident for Torture Garden, touring the world with the fetish brand and at one point managing their record label. She was then brought in to head Cyberdog’s worldwide musical operations, running their Cyberdance parties, hosting album launch parties and purchasing music for their chain of stores. Leaving Cyberdog in 2003 to concentrate on her own events, she launched Party Proactive and Proactive Records at Camden’s Purple Turtle in 2003. Run with partners Paul Jack, Joanna McEwen and Jacob Moss, Proactive have gone on to become one of the most dynamic brands in the club scene today, running events at Turnmills as well as being involved with NYE at Brixton Academy in association with HeatUK and The Gallery. In typical *Ting* style she has an insane schedule leading up to the event, which includes playing after LAB4’s last London set at The Fridge on Saturday December 30th and hosting the NYE countdown at The Fridge *Live* NYE, with Hed Kandi’s Elisa Mira.

But there’s far more to The *Ting* than organising and playing at events. Proactive Records has released several of her own productions, including ‘Industrial Machine’, ‘Wings of an Angel’, ‘Kaktus’ and ‘Out of Control’. She’s also been a part of The Nu Energy Collective for many years, with her tracks ‘Power in the Light’ and the infectious ‘Badgers on Acid’ helping cement her sound on the hardcore dance floors.

2006 however has seen some major changes in The *Ting*’s life. After a ‘chilled’ start to the year in Thailand, where she played at the legendary Paradise Waterfall rave and sang live at Gay Pride as well as commentating at the Muay Thai boxing, she returned to the UK and within the space of several months had been taken on by Queen of Clubs Management. She then started deepening her musical knowledge with a sound engineering course and more vocal training. And as for The *Ting*’s music? It transpires that there’s someone called Zoe Hart that’s slowly coming out of the woodwork keen to pursue a career in house, breaks, electro and other music styles! After so much happening in 2006 and rumours of a well-earned sabbatical on the horizon, I met up with *Ting* in Hoxton Square one grey London afternoon and got an update from the superstar herself over a very tasty mug of apple and pear mulled tea…

2006 has been another big year, with a long list of achievements in both The *Ting*’s professional and personal lives. But what have been the highlights? “The Bulldog Bash was a major highlight, as was the Polysexual Birthday. I sang happy birthday live over a mic and chucked loads of stuff at the audience. I’ve been watching and enjoying the growing popularity the Fridge has had over the last year and being an integral part of that and the onwards and upwards vibe of the club. I love the fact they put so much into their production and really give people the opportunity to express themselves performance-wise. It’s the only venue in London that encourages its djs to go beyond the norm, for which I’d really like to thank Zam and Chris and their continued hard efforts, which I’d really like to see pay off in 2007. Also playing back to back with Harry Proteus at Hard South at the Honey Club. We loved it so much we’re doing it again next year!

“Changing agencies was a big career step. It’s interesting at first as people get used to Kym’s style of management. She’s warmly welcomed me to the Queen of Clubs stable and given me the opportunity to hang out with other performance-related djs. It’s a wonderful family of like-minded people.”

It’s also been a successful year for Party Proactive too hasn’t it? “Yes it’s been a momentous year for Proactive! It’s been really nice being involved with people that as well as being business minded are good friends. Again, another family has been born. The way we’ve all gelled and worked together in such a positive, loving and encouraging environment has made it really work well, as has Paul’s serious business brain. I had no idea how Paul was going to take my little idea and make it shine!

“It’s not just about the business side of things: clubbing is a real wear and tear industry and unless you have warmth and encouragement behind the scenes it can be a cold and harsh environment. We’ve done our best to stay away from all that. Through this I’ve been able to allow Zoe Hart to flourish and grow. She’s come out and is now performing amongst some of the best djs in the world!”

Which leads us to *Ting*/Zoe’s work in the studio over 2006. “I’ve been studying sound engineering to better relay my musical desires. Producing alone is not enough. I wanted to better express myself and be able to relate my ideas in a more technical manner. It’s got to be better than saying, ‘Make the bass fatter please!’ Earlier in the year I worked with Technikal and now I’m working with Les from LAB4, developing a more industrial electro sound, with my vocals.”

I’ve certainly noticed that I’ve heard *Ting*’s vocals shine this year more than ever before. “Absolutely! I’ve been getting voice coaching from Bridget and have been for about four years. It’s all about finding the balance between the shouting and the oi oi’ing! I’ve taken a step back from all that, but I’m keeping my energy so that my true voice can come through.”

But rumour has it that there’s a bit of a career break on the horizon? “Well yeah, leading on from all that, becoming pregnant has made me go so much further inside myself and find my true voice. It’s a really good opportunity to take a break from the way it’s been in order to make room for how it will be. I’m never one to slip out quietly and my last set will be a back to bump set with Adam from LAB4 at Turnmills in March for the first Party Proactive event of 2007.”

Given the hectic nature of *Ting*’s lifestyle, a break seems like a good idea indeed. And if that’s what she’s achieved in 2006 alone, I can only imagine the highlights of her entire career to date. “I think my major career highlight was playing at HQXL playing back to back with Ed Real in front of 7000 people with my inflatable microphone, guitars and champagne bottles! The makeup alone took over two and a half hours! Check out the video and pics on my website (www.theting.net) and you’ll see what I mean!”

Having been there myself I can only assure you it was one of the most spectacular sets I’ve ever seen. The Dutch sure know how to throw a good party! As do the Japanese… “I loved dj’ing in Japan for Torture Garden. The last one was fantastic. Being taught to say ‘Have it’ in Japanese and saying it over the mic then having one and a half thousand Japanese all go ‘Hai!’ Touring Australia with my girlfriend and boyfriend was another highlight. Adelaide has got to be the maddest place on earth! They’re totally mad! And starting to set up the purchase of the land for our recording studio in Thailand, which will be my new house in a couple of years time.”

That’s quite a goal. Having achieved so much already, I’m wondering what other goals are on the horizon. “I’ll put out my first album before I go, definitely! It takes longer than you think though people! And obviously the more I get into music, the more knowledge I gain, the more my self expression deepens and the harder it is to say, ‘That’s ok’. So it may be a long time coming! We were also hoping to have a tour set up for next year, but obviously that’s off the cards for the time being. But it means more time in the studio!”

Does more time in the studio mean lots of navel gazing looking for inspiration? “It has done in the past. I was always a bit distracted by the internet and the general promotional stuff going on, Proactive stuff. Falling pregnant has made me really focussed and once you get beyond the outerworldly distractions, it can be really easy.”

“One of my other goals (well other than Proactive conquering the world!) is branching out to other countries and continuing to work with the best in the industry. Through my new production skills I’m looking forward to working and playing with a lot of talented people.”

I wonder what talented people she does admire the most in the music scene. “Sterling Moss for his technical ability and production. The Cyberdog album I did with him was way ahead of its time! He’s highly underrated and his talent is huge.

“I also admire Technikal for his ability to bang out anthem after anthem on his home PC with one monitor and a curtain that didn’t quite hang straight! Amazing talent, great future!

“LAB4 — having spoken to them about their history, I have new respect for their continued effort to push the boundaries by always bringing in the dark side.”

So is *Ting* as sad as I am that this Saturday will be LAB4’s last gig together in London? “I am and I’m not. It’s good that they’re moving to do something different. It may be the end of LAB4 but it’s certainly not the end of Adam and Les. They’ve both got so much to give and once you’ve been branded in one place it’s hard to move away from that. They’ve both got so much on, I’m so excited to hear what they’re both going to do!”

Which leads us to *Ting*’s first gig of the weekend at LAB4’s London finale. Is she looking forward to it? “Very much so! I’m also looking forward to seeing Mark [EG] again and enjoying another wicked night at the Fridge!”

Then there’s the big one: for *Ting* is back at the Fridge on Sunday night in the very important role of New Year’s Eve countdown hostess, along side Hed Kandi’s Elisa Mira, plus she’s also playing for Party Proactive at Brixton Academy. “At the Academy I’m going to be playing between Pete Wardman and Nick Sentience, so I get to combine hard house and hard trance, and with my new tracks it’s going to be perfect! Since I’m not doing last set the pressure is off, as that’s so important! All eyes are going to be on Nick, hehe, we’re watching you, mwahahahaha!”

And the countdown at the Fridge? “I’m still deciding exactly what to do, so there’ll be surprises all round!”

Finally, I wonder if she’s got any New Year’s resolutions up her sleeve? “I believe in constantly challenging myself all year round. Bollocks to just doing it once a year!”

The *Ting*’s forthcoming gigs in 2007 already include:
Colours — monthly residency on the second Saturday of every month at the Fridge
Polysexual — Feb 10
Resonance — Plymouth, Feb 17
Hardsouth — The Honey Club, Brighton, March 2
FINAL SET — Back to Bump with Adam LAB4 @ Proactive @ Turnmills, March 24

More: This year we are putting together some very serious production at the Fridge and this one will be one of the best productions you will see anywhere.

Everybody is asking where will you be for NYE, are you going to be massive outdoor or indoor venue with crappy sound system or are you simply going to be in the Fridge with the best sound system and production values?

Are you going to tempt yourself watching the wonderful performers that will entertain you throughout the night at The Fridge with their amazing costume and LED dance? Our performers have been working hard for this special occasion tailoring the night just for this NYE party with their amazing costume and extensive list of show itinerary.

For those of you who have seen the live shows in the Fridge, you know it’s amazing. So, for the first time in the hard dance scene we have 4 live shows in one night. NO OTHER hard dance event will have 4 amazing live shows on NYE; all live shows are unique and different.

So, where are we going to put all those live shows? We are building extra stages just for this night high up above the dance floor, designed and build by the original staff of the Fridge.

To make the experience even more intense, we have been working extremely hard putting extra lights and rigs into the Fridge, now, it has TRIPLE the amount of the original lights and extra lighting rigs for the NYE. Be prepared to be dazzled by the best light show in London!

To top it up, we also have the stadium size giant LED screen, those who frequent the fridge might has seen it, HOWEVER this time it will not be the same format, it will be different to complement the performers and the live shows.

There will be extra GAE sound rigs for this very special occasion.

If that’s not enough, then you have the giant glitter balloons, glitter rain, balloon drops, ticker tape drops, three powerful lasers and don’t forget the indoor fireworks to top it all up.

All Areas in the Fridge will be open for this special occasion, the balcony, chill out area, VIP room in our third room and the Icebox will all be OPEN.

Arrive early for the giveaways … CD’s, merchandise and more …, so you will have something to remember when you get home.
