Italian-Brazilian trancer DJ Fabio Stein finally hits the limelight Reported by Kiko / Submitted 07-02-07 22:07 Perseverance is a word featured in Fabio Stein’s dictionary. This Italian-born DJ who moved to Brazil while still young studied graphic design, but left it behind to pursue his ideal career in the dance music industry. To reach it, he had — and still has — an obsessive thought in mind: to produce his own music. The next step was to lock himself up in a studio and dedicate time to it. Tracks done, he then had to send them to as many DJs and labels as possible, waiting for a reply — which came, at last. Stein’s breakthrough moment came last year, when Judge Jules aired the track ‘Tran-4’ not once or twice on his weekly radio show, but a staggering 14 times. In 2006 he was also chosen to remix a Sander van Doorn track and had another of his remixes included on an Eddie Halliwell compilation. Well, 2006 is over, but the good news for Fabio Stein hasn’t dried out. His tracks are being sold at digital stores, he’s signed up with a label and this Friday 9 February he’s making his UK debut at Vaccine’s 1st Birthday. Fabio Stein — with this surname I presume you’ve got a German background, innit? Jokes aside, please introduce yourself. Lol! Everybody is curious about the ‘Stein’ bit, which isn’t my real surname. My name is Fabio Benedetti Isidori — imagine printing that on a flyer! I was born in 1980 in a tiny city in Italy called Spoleto. The nickname ‘Stein’ came about in 1996. At that time I used to listen a lot to a tune called ‘Dr. Stein’, from the German heavy metal band Helloween. That was also when I started to play around with audio software. In 1998, someone came up with the idea that I should burn my tracks on a CD and hand it to DJ named Ricardo Guedes. Without hesitation, I wrote ‘Dr. Stein’ on the sleeve and the name stuck… Why did you move to Brazil? Actually it wasn’t my idea, as I was only five when me and my family moved out from Italy due to my Dad’s work. And electronic music, when did it start to be part of your life? The music itself has always been part of my life. It was only at a house party in 1997 with my mates that someone played an Altern8 CD and that changed my life. When I listened to ‘Frequency’ I couldn’t believe my ears. From that day I started to research a lot about electronic music. You spent a couple of years in Italy. How was it? After many years studying in an Italian-Brazilian school, the natural step was to try and attend university in Italy. I went to live in Rome in 1999 but, sooner rather than later, I gave up on the idea of going to uni and bought a pair of decks and a mixer instead! I did a basic DJ course at the backyard of a vinyl shop called Re-Mix. I’d already bought my first vinyls and would quickly come back home to practice. Then I met one of the most important Italian MCs: Master Enjoy. This guy was part of the techno brand Soundz that used to throw parties around the central region of the country. Although I was a house DJ at that time, one day he gave me the chance to play a set at his party and, ever since, we’ve been friends. I joined Soundz and played with them until 2001, when I came back to Brazil. So why did you return to Brazil? Wouldn’t have been better for you remain in Europe? I wasn’t a professional DJ back then, I was just a beginner. I felt a bit lost because I had dropped out of uni and saw an uncertain future ahead as a DJ. So I decided to come back to my family in Brazil and joined a graphic design course — this time, though, I made it. Then I met DJ Jack, who had founded trance brand, Energy BR. I’d been migrating from house to trance (a genre I fell in love with in 2000) a couple of years before, so since then we started to work together in order to establish a local trance scene. Italy is a country very difficult for electronic music, as it’s 100% associated with fashion over there. Therefore we normally see radical changes in the Italian scene: just look at DJs such as Mauro Picotto, Joy Kitikonti or Mario Più, who constantly change their styles. When did you eventually become a DJ and producer? I think my work as a DJ became relevant in 2003, when I joined Energy BR. As a producer, despite having started to play with it in 1997, I think I only seriously began to make that happen in 2003 as well. That was the year that I ventured to the Winter Music Conference in Miami and distributed about 200 promos. It was an intense and interesting contact with the music industry. Why did you choose Euro trance? What attracted you? In music I’ve always searched for three elements: melody, energy and happiness. Trance was the slope in dance music that offered me all of them. I’d listened and enjoyed some other stuff in 1998 but, when I bought the CD ‘MTV Ibiza 2000: The Party’, I heard tracks such as Marc Et Claude’s ‘I Need Your Lovin’ (Dark Moon Remix), Rank 1’s ‘Airwave’ and Planet Perfecto’s ‘Bullet In The Gun’... Whoah, that blew me away! What have been your musical influences? The first DJ to influence me was Ricardo Guedes, that’s why I started playing house. All the following have since influenced me: Carl Cox, Danny Tenaglia, Carlos Manaça, Tiësto, Paul van Dyk, Mauro Picotto, Ferry Corsten, Yoji Biomehanika, Judge Jules, Scott Mac, Mark Sherry, Johan Gielen, Eddie Halliwell and Sander van Doorn. As producers, I’d mention: again, van Dyk, Picotto, Sherry and van Doorn, plus Nu NRG, Mark Norman, Marcel Woods, Randy Katana and Mac Zimms. You’re part of the Energy BR crew. Please tell us a bit more about it. When did it start out and how are the DJs? Energy BR started in 2002. It was DJ Jack’s initiative alongside Nuta, Justin and Alan França. The idea behind the brand was to reunite trance DJs from all over Brazil. It’s part of our casting: Márcio Passos and Bubty from Belém (North of Brazil); Dorph & Tedcorr from Campinas (near São Paulo); Flávio Grifo from São Luís (Northeast); Foxxy from João Pessoa (Northeast); Roger Lyra and Jay B, from Rio de Janeiro; Save and Superti from Porto Alegre (South); and a few DJs from São Paulo, including Jack, Justin, Nuta, Phabian, Cláudio Cavallera, Alex Strunz, Rodolfo Sabino and myself. We’ve got a website www.energybr.net with features, reviews, pics and videos of our gigs, competitions and threads. Our greatest achievement is our State of Trance party which, since our humble start in 2002, has grown so much that it’s become a national reference when it comes to trance. Our gig has around 1500 to 2000 regular punters and is held at Anzu Club with only Brazilian DJs. I believe the name State of Trance is inspired by Armin van Buuren’s radio show. How has it been? Actually, believe it or not, it’s a coincidence that the name of the party is the same of Armin’s program as we didn’t know about it. We’ve done some nights in small clubs for no more than 100 people, though our biggest gigs have been at Anzu Club — the venue that has received names such as van Buuren himself, Marco V, Judge Jules, Scot Project, Scott Bond and Ferry Corsten. It seems that 2006 was a blessed year for you. First, you won a contest to remix no-one other than trance don Mr. van Doorn. Then, your track ‘Tran-4’ was part of Judge Jules’ compilation ‘Judgement Sundays 2006 — The True Sound of Ibiza’. To top it off, your remix of Mainx’s ‘88 To Piano’ featured on Eddie Halliwell’s ‘Cream Ibiza 2006’. What’s coming up in 2007? 2006 was indeed one of the best years of my life. I worked a lot in studio, either on my tunes or doing remixes, and I believe that it’ll give me more opportunities for 2007. I’ve got three tracks almost ready to be released on Maelstrom Records (UK) and Silicon (Holland), as well as some remixes for Five AM, Discover Dark and Johan Gielen. This year I’ll dedicate more time in the studio and will also show my DJ skills. My manager and I have been working on getting more gigs in Europe in the middle of the year. When did you sign up with Maelstrom Records? Some time around May last year. It was thanks to Judge Jules, who played my Tran-4 track 14 times on his The Weekend Warm-Up radio show at BBC’s Radio 1! One day he said it was an unreleased track and therefore was perplexed that it hadn’t been signed yet. At the same week I received proposals from three labels! I chose Maelstrom because of the artists they work with as well as for being the only one that offered me more than one track. By the way, how did you meet him? And Eddie Halliwell? Can you believe that we never shook hands? In January last year I started to send my tracks to a bunch of DJs and labels. Jules was one of the few who replied me, asking for more. In February he came to play at Anzu Club and included two of my tracks in his set. Me and my mates went crazy! I walked to the front of the DJ booth and started to jump and shout like a fool until Jules realised I was the author of the tunes. So he wrote a note about ‘Tran-4’: “Easily the best track of 2006 so far.” Can you imagine my reaction? I couldn’t speak to him, though, after the gig. Since then, we’ve been talking via email. The infamous note I met Eddie at his performance in São Paulo last year. I had sent those tracks to him as well. During his set he played my remix of Manix’s ‘88 To Piano’ and said some words on the microphone, but I think punters were too drunk and didn’t understand a word! Eddie On 9th February you’re making your debut in London, playing at The Gallery, one of the most important nights of the world. Are you preparing a special set? I’m looking forward to the date! I’m already re-recording all my CD case for the day. I’m preparing some special edits of my tracks as well. I wanna be the first to arrive and the last one to leave the club, as I’d like to see all the marvelous people I met through the internet last year. I’d like to listen to all sets because I admire the DJs who are playing with me at the night. It’ll be such an honor to share the decks with them! An unforgettable moment? Recently I had a chance to make one of my dreams come true: playing Binary Finary’s ‘1999’ (Gouryella Remix) at 6am at an open-air party, with the sun rising on the horizon and hundreds of people raising their hands to the air! It was a magic moment! A set to be forgotten? One of my worst moments was at the first edition of State of Trance in 2005. I was the first DJ to play and the whole sound system stopped working: the decks and the CDJs… Every time I tried to mix, the equipment had a problem. I was so pissed off I threw my headphones on the floor and swore at the venue’s owner. My mates managed to sort everything out though and the rest of the night was fantastic!
