Bringing the Brazilian way of life to the Antiworld 070707 Festival

Anderson de Almeida Alves and Renato Lopes Teixeira. Do these two DJ names ring you a bell? OK, fair enough... I’ll give you some clues, so you can figure out who they are: the former features in the DJmag Top 100 DJs list, whereas the latter regularly plays at one of the Top 50 Clubs. Got it yet?
Well, the alias Anderson Noise may sound more familiar: he’s played at Knebworth 2001, Headstart, Homelands, The End, Meganite @ Privilege Ibiza, Womb in Tokyo… The list is endless! Renato Lopes, on the other hand, doesn’t have a nickname, nor has been to as many countries as his countryman. However, he’s set up a DJ agency and both are considered some of the most influential DJs in Brazil, being pioneers who’ve introduced dance music to their cities.
If minimal producer Gui Boratto and indie band Cansei de Ser Sexy aka CSS have been the new reference points when it comes to Brazilian electronic music, it’s thanks to the effort and hard work of Noise, Lopes and many other locals. Proof of this national success is that psy trance act Wrecked Machines and Noise himself were the first Brazilians to hit the Top 100 DJs (55th and 79th place, respectively). In addition, four Brazilian nightclubs are the best in the world — D-Edge, a venue where Renato Lopes often spins his records, got the 21st position.
As another summer season is about to start, Never Enough and Jungle Drums have teamed up to bring a tropical atmosphere to the Antiworld 070707 Festival. On 7th July you’ll have the chance to understand what all the fuss is about. There will be not only DJ sets, but also live performances from rapper BNegão and his band, Brazil’s sweetest voice Cibelle and Zeep Band. Make sure you see Noise’s set, as he’ll be filming a special program for his online TV Noise. Don’t mistake Noise for Lopes: both are bald, slim and play techno. Apart from that, see you on the dancefloor! Or “Te Vejo Na Pista”!
Anderson Noise
First and foremost, why the nickname Noise?
That’s a good story. Soon after I started playing I was forced to take my turntables to parties, because the person who rented the sound system didn’t actually bring them. So I began to rent my own equipment and made some extra money. When I ordered my business card, I realised I had to create a name for my sound system, so it came the “Noise” word. At the time my artistic name was just DJ Anderson. A year after a friend of mine was creating a flyer for a party and the art-worker asked her who would play. She said: “Anderson, from the Noise sound… You know what? Put it as Anderson Noise, please!”
How was the beginning of your career in Belo Horizonte, a city without nightlife as intense as São Paulo’s or Rio de Janeiro’s? What were the main challenges at the time?
It was tough because people just wanted to listen to rock music, so I decided to make my own parties, which happened until 2000. There were many problems, such as the lack of clubs and the difficulty of buying good records.
When did you realise you would be a professional DJ? Who supported you?
I’ve always been a music nutter. On my 17th birthday, my mate Roberio gave me a turntable and I put it together with another one I already had, which I used to record mix tapes at the shop I worked. One day, a local promoter listened to my mix at the shop and invited me to DJ at his party. This was when I became a professional DJ.
You’re one the the most famous Brazilian DJs, having played at many festival and clubs around the world. Where was the memorable night?
My first performance in Japan was unforgettable!
You recorded ‘Anderson Noise — Live At Skol Beats 2004’, the first electronic music CD recorded live in Brazil. You also registered the gig on a DVD. Right at the beginning of your set there was a power cut. Did you any time think the whole plan had gone down the drain?
At the time I was disoriented! It seemed it wouldn’t work… I think it was the longest 23 minutes of my life! Thankfully dear Daddy in Heaven sorted it out and the public didn’t leave the tent, even with other cool artists playing elsewhere.
You have played at all Skol Beats editions. What were the main changes you have noticed all these years? Is electronic music already part of the Brazilian musical culture?
For me it’s an honor to have played all editions and, at each one, I had different stories. The move from the Interlagos autodrome (an open-air grassy field) to the Sambodrome (a concrete-made facility for Samba parades) hit everyone, but the first time at the Sambodrome, when I played the closing set on the main stage, was the best one for me!
This year many people complained about splitting the festival into two days. Electronic music is at every event in Brazil. The only thing that annoys me is the lack of publications to show what’s going on here.
What have you been producing lately? Is there any release at Noise Music this year?
Gui Boratto and I have just released an EP on Noise Music. We’ve got three more releases for this year. I hope I’ll have more time to dedicate to my productions.
On Saturday 7th July you’re playing at the Never Enough tent at Antiworld 070707 Festival. What do you think about this opportunity to show a bit of the Brazilian sound to Europeans? Are you preparing a special set?
I think it’s really nice a festival like Antiworld 070707 has a Brazilian tent. I never prepare myself. I always do what has to be done right at the moment, so it’ll depend on how excited the crowd will be!
By the way: I’ve been told you want to record your set at Antiworld 070707 and broadcast it at TV Noise. How did you come about with the TV project?
Yeah, we do want to record a special Antiworld 070707 program! TV Noise (www.tvnoise.com.br) started because of my DVD. Me and Cadu, the DVD’s producer, got along really well, he listened so much to my Radio Noise (www.radionoise.com.br) and came up with the idea of recording weekly programs.
Last, but not least: you featured for the first time among the DJmag Top 100 DJs in 2006. Has anything changed in your life?
Here in Brazil it’s changed a lot and I believe it will change even more when DJmag Brazil hit the news agencies.
Renato Lopes
When was your first contact with electronic music?
It was in the ’80s with techno-pop bands such as Yazoo, Depeche Mode and Kraftwerk.
You’ve been collecting records since your childhood. What were your preferred artists and genres?
Since I was young I’ve been crazy about music and records. I used to listen to a lot of what my parents and brothers liked: classic music, bolero, tango, MPB (Brazilian Popular Music), Elvis Presley, Beatles etc. It was a big salad! During adolescence I started to buy my own records, a lot of disco compilations, soap opera soundtracks and so on.
Where were you born? When and why did you moved to São Paulo?
I was born in Registro, on the south coast of São Paulo state. I moved to São Paulo capital in 1980, after finishing high school. I came seeking a job, as in the countryside it was hard for teenagers to get an opportunity in the late ’70s.
You worked in a bank before becoming a DJ. Why? And how was the first time you actually DJed?
The work in a bank was what supported me in São Paulo. In 1982 I did a radio course and work at Rádio Eldorado, from 1983 to 1987. There I got in contact with DJs and clubs and one day I was offered a time slot at Madame Satã, in 1986. It was my first residency. Then, in 1988, me and some friends founded Nation Disco Club, one of the most influential clubs at the time.
You’ve played in countries such as England, France, Germany and Israel. Where did you have the best night? And the worst one?
One of the most memorable moments away from Brazil was in Berlin, when I played at Tresor. It was a period that the club had some police raids. The club had been closed down a couple of weeks before, and it reopened on the night I played. There was a really up-for-it crowd, which stayed until earlier hours of the following day. Another great gig was in London, in a studio somewhere around Shoreditch. Yet, a weird experience was in Israel. It was the opening night of a club, and because the guest DJ was Brazilian, they didn’t tell me and hired some people to play and dance samba — it ended up too cliched!
You’ve got a DJ agency called Smartbiz. When and why did you found it? What are the names in the casting and what events have you been involved?
We founded Smartbiz in 2000 as me and other DJs started to be requested more often around Brazil and abroad. We needed someone to look after contracts and bookings, leaving us to dedicate ourselves to the artistic side of the business. At Smartbiz we’ve got DJs and live acts by the likes of Mau Mau, Renato Ratier, Andy and Digitaria. Our artists often play at events such as Skol Beats Festival, Nokia Trends, Motomix and Pop Rock Brasil. We also represent international names like DJ Hell, Miss Kittin, Laurent Garnier and Michael Meyer. In addition, we’ve got Smartbiz Parties, which is responsible for producing gigs; a weekly radio show called Radio Smartbiz; and our label Smartbiz Trax.
Where can we find you playing around?
I normally play at Mothership at D-Edge and am resident at a monthly party called Tara, which takes place at Glória. I also join projects done by some of my friends, such as George ACTV, DJ Mimi and Fábio Lipo and Lalai.
Please tell us what you’ve been doing production-wise. You had a track elected by the former magazine Muzik as one of the best tech-house releases. When was it? Have you got something to be released soon?
I’ve got some stuff released on compilations and other projects. The latest one is a remix of the track ‘Wonder Bossa’, by the Brazilian singer Vera Medina. I did another remix of a track called ‘Spring’, which is part of the album City of God Remixed.
My first work released in Europe was a single I did in partnership with Haris Custovic for his label Laus Records, in 2002. We made ‘São Brixtonio’, which had a remix from DJ Mau Mau. We had nice feedback from DJs and the British press at the time. I’ve been working on my own tracks at the moment, though I’m not sure whether they’ll be launched as an album or separately.
What do you think about the opportunity to show a bit of the Brazilian sound to Europeans at the Antiworld 070707 Festival? Are you preparing a special set? What kind of sound will you be playing?
I’m happy to play at Antiworld 070707 because I’ll be alongside my mates Anderson Noise and Renato Cohen. My set is focused on tech-house with influences of minimal and Detroit sounds. It also has more groove and beats, typical from Brazil, a land rich in rhythms.
To finish off, what do you reckon about four Brazilian clubs featured among the 50 best ones in the world? What gigs would you recommend to a foreigner?
Brazilian nightclubs have an international recognition thanks to the effort of local DJs in presenting a consistent work, added to the fact that we have a crowd interested in quality music, fun and high standard regarding the structure offered by the venues almost throughout the country. All this has opened up the people’s ears and contributed to bring international names to play nowadays. For tourists around São Paulo, you must do a night tour and visit D-Edge, Gloria, Vegas and Lov.e, as well as bars such as the 8 and A Torre (The Tower). If you’re in Rio, Fosfobox, Dama de Ferro and Zero Zero (00). Elsewhere, you must go to Garage (Campo Grande), Warung Club (Itajaí) and so on. There are too many good places! It’s like panning for gold in a mine: the deeper you go, the more surprises you will find!
