Celebrating 10 years at the top: Will Paterson gets Frantic Reported by Adam Symbiosis / Submitted 06-08-07 18:43 In front of me sits what amounts to the Godfather of hard house. Presiding over his manor for 10 years now and with birthday celebration planning in full flow, this is a man who should be pleased with himself. But he hasn’t got to his lofty position via horse heads and shattered knee caps (if you discount too much dancing), instead determination, hard work, and an undying love for the scene have driven on Will Paterson, head honcho for Frantic, to provide you, the clubber, with the best night of your life. Getting into hard house after university, the soon to be promoter was originally into grunge bands like Jesus and Mary Chain, Nirvana and other Seattle groups along with punk bands as well. Beginning to get frustrated by the music, his tastes continually leant to harder and harder styles. “I felt as if I had gone as far as I could go with the music and it had started to repeat itself a little bit but then I walked into Heaven on a Friday night pretty much by accident.” Although he’d been exposed to some dance music at Lancaster University with the Stone Roses’ first gig and the explosion of outdoor raves, the lure of the textbooks was too much back then, however those London arches obviously had that little bit more. “I started listening to dance music and it’s just sods law the very first club I went into was a hard house club.” I wondered if his background in harder music left him in good stead to be able to dive right into hard house. “It’s a connection that’s often been made. Look at Paul Glazby, he was into Slayer and all those heavy metal bands. A lot of people I knew were into the harder end of rock and then started to listen to dance music and found it was as pacy so I think there is a natural inclination for people who like more underground music to like the harder end of dance music.” So it was this eureka moment in discovering the tougher sounds that set Will on his way to putting on some of the largest dance parties in the capital, but he didn’t go to university to become a promoter. In fact teaching was his original vocation; with history as his main subject at the inner city school he was working at, but how did this experience set him up for life in the fast lane? “I think it was absolutely fundamental into making me the person I am. Being able to hold the attention of 32 relatively deprived inner city kids, many of them with low literacy levels and very low attention spans week in week out for a long period of time, enabled me to be a better communicator, a more thoughtful promoter, a better sales person. Also I think it gave me the confidence to take the knocks of promoting. When it’s going well everyone wants to know you, when it’s not, no one does. Your social life and your work life begin to blur so much as to becoming one and you begin not to have free time to yourself. This can be very hard on you as an individual as your confidence and your well being becomes completely tied up in your brand. Teaching gave me that confidence to get through.” That’s obviously an important point as Will with Frantic has been intimately linked with hard house for over a decade now and has been personally responsible for overseeing the changes in style between bounce and filth and groove and the near ever present hoovers and horns, so out of all the differing sounds what’s been his favourite part of the development of the msuic? “I’ve loved things about every stage of it,” he enthuses. “It’s pretty difficult to put into words how exciting it was going to places like Garage at Heaven, the first club I went to regularly, to the early days of Convergence with BK and Farley and Chris C bringing down music on dubplates. It went from say 15 minutes of hoovers in a night to a whole night of it, it was amazing! Then there was the early filth records with RR Fierce, I loved filth to death! But then I still remember the day when Ed Real brought into BK’s studio the unsolicited remix of Hoovers And Horns. We stuck it on and thought what was this! I know its not that popular but I love the oink-oink bounce stuff, I’ve always liked hardstyle as well. What I found hardest to swallow but came to love was UK hard trance. There was a heavy demarcation at the time between hard house and hard trance but when Nick [Sentience] was working at Nukleuz making stuff like (instru)Mental and all these things with Phil [Reynolds], it was an amazing time and he changed the whole of the musical scene for 6 months. I just like hard music!” Taking that love of hard music wherever he went eventually led to the Frantic brand going overseas, a difficult step. One of the key bases was out in Australia, though this proved more challenging that expected. Still running in Sydney today after 7 years, along with occasional parties in Melbourne, maybe it was the distances and time differences involved that caused the biggest stumbling block. “I was a lot less experienced, a lot more immature, if I went back and could have my time again I think I could do it a lot better than I did.” Direct involvement stopped after two years and in essence a franchise operation began so I asked if we might see the Frantic brand move into other areas? The possibility is there but an enlarged team isn’t as other projects take precedence these days. Those with a keen eye for flyers might have noticed one of those projects as it slowly makes its presence felt across London and beyond. Evolution99, put together by Will, Damian from Heat and Danny from Turnmills, has taken club promotion and turned it on its head. Prior to its inception if you wanted to promote you had to do all the donkey work yourself, now this through the line agency copies the widespread model found across the advertising world and leaves promoters free to concentrate on their parties. But just how important has it been for Will to develop these new projects. “My first love is promotion,” he tells me but as part of the expansion he’s had to surround himself with the right people to take the ad and DJ agency, Hidden and other ventures forward. “I still usually go to seven clubs in a weekend and it’s a big frustration being able to find people who have the same energy and drive as me. Luckily I’ve been able to find some very good people to help me and they have those sort of energy levels.” It’s interesting to take an overall look at the dance scene to see the re-emergence of dance based bands in popular culture on the crest of the nu-rave cult. Acts like Calvin Harris and The Klaxons look to fuse vocals, synthesized sounds and repetitive beats blurring the lines between dance and band music while making dance music cool again while DJs are continuing to experiment further with CDJs and software to make their own tracks live out of someone else’s but how will this change the landscape of hard dance. “I’m involved in a couple of events which can be loosely described as nu-rave and certainly you can see it very strongly in there,” he tells me. “Rather than the artist deciding to use the technology, the technology is using the artist. What I mean by that is the CDJs in particular have developed to become omnipresent and this is the first wave in changing how people make any type of dance music. Whether it’s the memory stick with pre-recorded loops or samples or even just the functionality of the CDJs which means you can do so much more than just vinyl, unless you are incredibly talented with decks. I certainly see Ableton too and all the permutations of software also certainly ready to move into hard dance.” Is this then the first wave of DJs becoming electronic musicians sculpting their music from the building blocks of other productions, using CDJs and laptops as their instruments? “I think this is the first wave of democratising what you can do with the sounds. Decks democratised being able to play music, next we are democratising what you do with the sounds. It’s very interesting times. I love the way dance music constantly changes. On the surface it appears not to change, underneath it sows the seeds of its own demise. Every genre is always changing and other genres are coming along.” But how then does that affect Will as a promoter and having to deal with the changing styles? “As a promoter I look to new genres, to promote new music and constantly reinvent myself. As far as hard dance is concerned I think as with any genre there is a need to innovate, as long as you are innovating within the rules of the genre, to be respectful to the rules without being restricted by them. I don’t think change for changes sake is helpful for hard dance, but change if it works within the loosely defined rules is important. For example it’s well known I was critical of so called intelligent Hard Dance because I tried to play it at Frantic but no one wanted it, no one liked it. It was called poor mans techno and it didn’t work within the framework.” Still, people will at the end of the day vote with their feet and vote with their money and it’s that driving factor that keeps the wheels of innovation turning. And they’ve been turning, sometime slowly, sometimes quickly over the past 10 years but did he ever imagine the rollercoaster of a journey he would take? Simply put the answer is no but with each year passing things got bigger and bigger. “I never envisaged how hard, emotional and difficult it would be, the unbelievable highs then the lows but I’m hoping for a resurgent hard house scene which to be honest will never be what it was but not for moneys sake or for the sake of being big but just because we can do so much more with more people, more artists. I think the thing that excites me now is we’ve gone back to basics, the scene is tiny compared to what it was, it’s like it was back in 1998 where if you were into it you had to search out the parties and the passion has come back.” And if you still don’t know what we’ve been talking about, make sure you get yourself down the front with us at Koko this Saturday.
