Enrico takes on Indig02 Reported by HarderFaster / Submitted 27-10-08 15:34 As promoter of one of the biggest psy trance parties in London, Antiworld, Enrico Sorbello has been responsible for many a lost night in some of London’s most loved clubs but also other unique or underused venues. After two years since the last interview HarderFaster decided it was time we went to find out more. Enrico Sorbello For the next party, Antiworld is taking over the sumptuous Indig02 at the redeveloped Dome (now called the 02). As a quickly developing centre of clubbing with Matter just having opened it’s doors, alongside the many bars and restaurants, Indig02 with its giant bars, large main dancefloor and amphitheatre style seating could this be the smartest club in Antiworld’s clubbing history? You got into promoting in 1999. Do still have the same the same passion as you did in the early days? Oh yes! Still the same energy as 1999 but with 10 years more experience and knowledge so it work and looks 10 times better! Psy trance has continually developed and has started to become huge in the UK with packed parties around the county. Why do you think it’s grown so big and how do you hope to continue to develop the scene? Well the psy trance of today is very close to the normal trance and hard dance, so I reckon the reason why it has grown so big is because of that similarity. Also the players and the promoters have understood that a band or DJ cannot play four gigs in one night across the country as they will end up boring the crowds and eventually killing the scene. The future I am not sure but at the moment its looking good I can tell you that! You’ve brought some of the biggest acts to the UK, like Infected Mushroom, Astrix and Sub6 for example, what key decisions do you base your bookings on? I have worked very closely with HOMmega and BNE for the last seven years and also now with Coast II Coast agency. These guys have the best bands and all we do is talk and see who has the new albums coming out and we keep launching them and their good music in the UK scene. Who do you hope to bring in over the coming years that you haven’t yet and who do you think will be big in the future and why? Well I have brought all the bands I wanted to bring already and I will keep doing it. The thing is that there are two of them in particular (Infected Mushroom and Astrix) that every and each time they play rock the crowds more and more with new blinding shows! This is why we play them more often than the others. In the future however we will work hard on Skazi to make him as big as the others in the UK. Psychedelic Academy You’re originally from Italy, what is it about the UK market that makes you want to have your sound and parties here and not in Italy? In Italy is all about house and techno and we do trance so there is not much of a chance for us there, however we are moving to Ibiza where Antiworld will have 16 shows in 16 weeks over summer 2009 Can you tell us a bit more about the Ibiza parties? Heheh, too early to say the exact plans but we are fully confirmed and moving there from December 1st this year! The psy trance scene is a lot smaller in Ibiza with house, trance and techno ruling the roost there. How do you hope to break into the scene and make psy there as big as it is here and especially in South America and Israel? It was the same in London seven years ago. I remember when I did the first Psychedelic Academy in 2002 people though I was crazy and that not many people would go to the show! The reality was we sold out without any problems and then did Alexandra Palace too and kept The Academy, Coronet, SeOne, The Rex and many more venues rammed. So the same thing will happen in Ibiza as well and again I say psy trance and trance are now very similar and you’ll soon see Astrix vs Paul van Dyk in the same venue! South America is so far away and I don't know much of it but I reckon the scene there is massive but people don't know much of the music. You may get 40,000 people to watch Infected there but the crowd won’t go nuts like the London crowd and they will hardly know the band playing. Here is always the best. We love London! Talking of South America, do you think you’ll take the Antiworld brand on tour out there? No, we need to establish first in Europe and then maybe, who knows?! 07-07-07 You’ve had some well publicised problems with outside contractors at your last festival despite it being well received by the people that went. How did you bounce back from those issues and will we see another Antiworld festival? No, I won’t be doing any more outdoor parties or festivals in the UK. This year every single one lost money and reputation and I don't understand the rules that promoters need to follow to make it happen: Stop music at midnight? Bring a passport at the gate? Why? Its meant to be fun and to me looks like going to jail! Check out the festivals in Germany or Spain or Portugal and YES I will do outdoors there! How do you motivate yourself to put on each party? What do you do to get yourself in the frame of mind to put on such big parties? Antiworld will only work if its in a venue with a minimum of 2000 people, the name, the vibe and the line up are extreme and the people like that, also we only do four events in one year in London. The motivation comes to me from watching a full house at 5:45am and seeing 2000 people smiling to the lights and lasers! This is the best thing in life for me! How much planning goes into each party and how does your team help you? I spend three months making an event and I work with about 25 people plus 30 DJs to make it all happen. There is also around 15 production members; the venue is a big part of the production and when it kicks off it takes all the time. Sometimes there is not enough hours in one day to deal with everything! Who else helps you in the promotion of each party and how do you motivate them to push the event? It s a natural reaction. I always struggle at the beginning as I get relaxed after the end of an event but slowly and gradually I get into the party vibe and from that point it is promotion 24/7. Indig02 You’ve hosted parties at some of London’s biggest and best venues from SeOne, to Brixton Academy, to Alexandria Palace and now Indig02 at The Dome. How have you secured each impressive venue and what do you hope from the latest one? The reputation of Antiworld events speaks for itself to venues and I have never had too many headaches booking them. But we do work professionally and have a great team for health and safety and production and this is what counts when you book big venues. Is there anywhere else you’d like to have a party in London that you haven’t yet? Yes I want to do a weekender event in London or an event in a five star hotel or something stupid and crazy that will entertain people and make them feel good and special.
