Escape Into The Park: Reviewed

Reported by Chicca-Dave / Submitted 24-06-09 17:38

As Wales’ premier festival event, Escape Into The Park has become a must do destination for clubbers and a firm favourite in the summer calendar. Despite the threat of rain and the many announcements of festival cancellations last year and even into this season, the show (as they say) went on! HarderFaster sent correspondent ChiccaDave to check out just how they do it Welsh style!

We’d been driving for 6 hours. We initially thought that we’d left plenty of time to get there (setting off at 5 in the morning should have guaranteed it), but lots of road works put paid to that! With no post code or address to use the sat nav was out the window, so we just headed towards Swansea town centre and tried to put our foot down. As we made our way through the slowly moving traffic a mini bus passed us in with everyone on board cheering and one guy waving his ticket at us. Clubbers always seem to be able to recognise other clubbers. Soon the footpaths started to fill up with people adorned with all sorts of fluorescent clothing, all heading in one direction. All I can assume is that the Gods chose us to look after on this day, because with only five minutes to blast off, the traffic kept moving and finding a parking space (usually a nightmare) was simplicity in itself, right next to the park gates, result!

After a quick five minute walk up the park’s main avenue - which was now packed with people all wanting in to the festival - things were getting hot; the Gods maybe getting a tad arrogant now and beating everyone with some serious sunshine. Entry was via our allotted ticket booth and of course the obligatory body and bag search, which I must say was done in a professional yet very pleasant manner by the security staff. As soon as we were through we headed off to find our base of operations and to find out who was what, where and when.

As we set off across the park first was the main stage. The tunes were already blasting out so we stopped to have a listen and check out who was on the decks - an unassuming looking guy on the decks had his head down in concentration seemingly oblivious to the throng that was slowly starting to fill the park. We gently strolled round each tent to check who was on but kept coming back to the main stage to take in some more of the DJs set which could only be described as absolutely gorgeous. Eric Prydz opening, there’s something you don’t see every day, and I must say it set the tone in the park really well!

In the Godskitchen vs Polysexual tent Big Al was doing a similar job and by the time we passed the Bionic tent everywhere was filling nicely. Our first two or three hours were spent dashing around everywhere trying to find out what tent was which, which DJ was playing at which tent; all while taking the odd photo and checking back to the VIP area for a drink and a quick rest. It all set me up for my big disappointment of the day, after bumping into Cally & Juice and having a quick natter with them, I learnt they had already played and I’d missed them! I tell you now I was well upset as they were one of the sets that I really wanted to catch.

Those of you that had access to the VIP area will know how good the L’America tent was. I have to admit that we were seduced not just by the sound of house but by the fun and friendly atmosphere from both the clubbers and DJs and, almost without realising, we spent quite a large portion of our time there.

Other highlights were the Utah Saints on the main stage, who brought the park back to life after the clubbers had started to wilt under the long afternoon heat from that never ending sunshine. Cally Gage and Andy Whitby set the pace in the Godskitchen vs Polysexual tent - Cally was actually sounding (dare I say it ) more bouncy than Andy; recently she appears to be enjoying herself a lot more when she’s on the decks and this is coming across in her sets. Andy’s bounce just sounded a little tougher around the edges (not surprising really he has started back on the filth trail) and I for one really enjoyed it. So did the rest of the tent, it was rammed. One clubber, Natalie Bason, told me, “We weren’t there for long but yet again the weather, crowd and atmosphere certainly didn’t disappoint. The Welsh certainly know how to party hard and make a noise and they did just that through the fantastic sets of the Awsum. Glad I made the three hour trip to catch them.”

Unfortunately I didn’t make it into the Bionic / Uproar tent until very late but Tink who spent most of the day there said, “Every set was amazing especially Showtek. Good effort all round, I had a wicked day!”

And lastly the L’America tent; I wouldn’t be able to name any of the DJs, save the headliner Norman Jay, but what I can say is that they were all brilliant and between them they kept the house party vibe going at full tilt all through the day!

Rounding up it was an amazing day with a lot of good, strong sets from the DJs. With a fantastic atmosphere in the park helped by the good weather I met some top people and some of the friendliest clubbers around; whether they knew you or not everyone was really polite and happy to talk to you! Of course none of this would have been possible without the hard work of the festival organisers and staff. I dare say we’ll be back next year.
