Mebjar returns to London for Halcyon's international trance celebration at MOS

Reported by Tara / Submitted 20-12-12 20:25

The latest Liquid Records resident Mohammed Mebjar bides his time between his native United Arab Emirates (UAE) and London. Owner of A State of Endorphins Records, he produces uplifting progressive and psychedelic trance that he’s played to receptive dancefloors alongside the likes of Tristan, Avalon and Headroom.

Over the next few days Mebjar’s hard work and dedication to his art are really going to pay off, as he’s got what can only be considered the gig of a lifetime – playing the main room of Ministry of Sound at Halcyon on Boxing Day, headlining with his heroes Infected Mushroom and Astrix at the biggest celebration of trance to hit the capital in 2012. The party continues into New Year’s Eve, where he’s playing at Psyrhythmix at the 414 followed by Elixir of Life’s 24-hour marathon celebration. With the festive fun about to kick off, we tracked him down to his home in Abu Dhabi to answer a few questions for HarderFaster…

You’re from United Arab Emirates (UAE), were you into music growing up and how did you get interested in DJing and producing dance music?

I started quite young really. When I heard my first electronic track I knew then that this is what I wanted. My first DJing experience was by using tapes and records.

How would you describe the Mebjar sound?

A synergy between uplifting and euphoric psy trance.

Who or what have been your musical influences over the years? And now?

Infected Mushroom, Alex Morph, Woody van Eyden, Dave Randall, Dave Joy, A*S*Y*S*, DJ Phonetic, DJ Tatana, DJ Energy (who sadly passed way), DJ Green Head, DJ Fabio and Matt Darey. There are a lot of unknown producers as well who’ve inspired me...

Growing up in UAE, did you get into clubbing or raving at all?

Not really… I enjoyed music in my car and the comfort of my home, but electronic music was not famous back home then. I was exposed to it in Europe during my summer vacations. On the other hand, the UAE has developed itself considerably, to the extent where it has now become a hub for international events and world class producers.

What inspired you to come to the UK and live the dream?

London to me is a city where it all comes together. Its history and diversity reflects on the music and the culture within the UK. I love this city because it gives you the experience and the chance to interact with musicians from around the world.

Please tell us a bit about your productions and where you’re at with them. Are you a self-taught producer or did you do a course?

I learned the basics by trial and error really, but when I started to learn on an advanced level I had good friends that helped me along the way. I have released a few tracks and there’s much more to come. I’m at the stage of launching an EP and then an album once I’m happy with them for commercial release.

What have been the highlights of your musical career so far?

There is so much to learn and share! In other words, for me it’s vital to interact with international DJs and venues in order to develop myself – my ability and knowledge.

Sharing and feedback is also important to understand where you want to head with your productions. As a producer, you sometimes write tracks for yourself and sometimes for other people. I am still learning from other leading artists so my highlight, in a nutshell, is learning from others and sharing what I know.

And what goals do you have for the future? Are you going to make any New Year’s resolutions?

Yes, to work harder and to try and enter the international dance music scene.

What do you like to get up to when you’re not playing or producing music? What would you say is a typical day for you?

I have a day job, so a typical day would be working on my tracks trying to produce and fix sounds when I am done with my work.

You’re playing the main room at MOS for Halcyon next week alongside DJmag top 100 winners Infected Mushroom and Astrix – this must be a dream come true?! Any ideas what you’re going to place yet?

I am ready I hope! It was always my dream to play with Infected and Astrix, they inspired me to produce music. I am very appreciative that I have an opportunity like that. For me it’s a true testament that music can bring people together with a common ground of love and unity.

You’ve got not one but two big gigs for NYE, playing at HarderFaster’s favourite venue the 414 for Psyrhythmix and then again at Elixir of Life’s epic 24-hour bash. This sounds like quite a marathon?! Will you be napping between sets or making the most of the parties?

I will relax and enjoy the ride, this is what I’ve always wanted to do.

Finally, what do you have around the corner for 2013?

To play internationally and release new stuff. I am very excited to travel and learn about different cultures and see how different cultures can react to different sounds.

Thanks for your time Mr Mebjar! Looking forward to seeing you play at Halcyon on Boxing Day!
