Out of interest, how were united "shrewd" in commercialising their brand image?

Its fairly common knowledge that Manchester United were at the forefront of realising the potential value inherent in an famous established football club. Realising the untapped value of overseas fans, TV channel, Merchandise, Megastore etc.

Perhaps in footballing terms, but are they not merely copying the same blueprints that had been laid out by Basketball and Hand-egg teams across the pond years previously?

EDIT: I'd hardly call it shrewd to capitalise on your fanbase. I'd call it incredibly stupid not to do so.

They have been particularly good at it, far more so than US sports teams before them. Manchester United were the first sports team in the world to be valued at $1Bn back in the 2000s. Amazingly they still are the leading team, despite being hamstrung with crippling debts by those cunts the Glazer family.

Which increased when the glazers came in with their massive debt.

It seems a bit odd to laud a club for being so shrewd and commercial in one sentence, then to lament the fact that its owners treat it as a commercial entity...

Recent owners...they had nothing to do with making United the brand it's become, they are capitalising on it, for sure...and who said I was lauding it, I'm just saying that United's money came from within the club, from their success on the pitch, as opposed to being stolen from the Russian people or from Oil or Construction or whatever.

it is more the way that they bought the club via a mountain of debt they then put on the club that wasn't there before, which most people resent, but you have to admit they have increased sponsorship and commercial revenues. the thing is the debt is still hanging heavily on the club and even once it is cleared it is uncertain how much of the revenue will be put back into the club and how much goes to the glazers.
